Everton Youth Teams Thread

What a goal from Charlie Whittaker. Peabrainosaurus doesn't even have him called up for training with the first team as far as I know. And never in a million years would he have Whittaker on the bench as it's so very essential to have 2 goalkeepers on the bench for every Premier League game. Whittaker is 21 now and his contract expires in June 2025. He's a real talent whose chances have been hampered by injury but sadly one we'll lose without even being given a chance I suspect.

In an odd way the “ two goalkeeper “ nonsense is I believe actually helping the likes of Whitaker, Dixon and other u21s , at least they’re getting game time and are able to display their talent rather than warming the bench like Armstrong. Even if he came on Whitaker would be watching the ball sail over his head anyway. Without big strikers like Okoronkwo and Sherif in their lineup the u21s are playing the ball around to feet more as in Whitaker’s goal , Beaumont -Clarke is cutting in from the left , shooting and scoring rather than crossing into the box and hoping. The aerial threat then comes from the CBs as in the goals we scored.

I think there’s a huge recency bias there. Aside from the last, what, 4-6 weeks, I would never have said there was anything resembling a premier league player there. Obviously a skilled lad but has never shown any of the truculence required at the next level, esp if you compare him to someone like Metcalfe who’s 2-3 years his junior.

are you talking about whitaker?
he was looking good 3-4 years ago and training with the first team before all his injury problems of the last few years so not really recency bias.

As someone mentioned previously, he has suffered with injury's over the years, and a little like Osman was rated a bit before that.

I'm not one to hugely go OTT with players under 21 performances, it very rarely converts into a Premier League footballer, but for the sake of Saturday were our only options on the bench for forward roles were Beto & Harrison and our only midfield option was Armstrong. What harm would it of done to take one of Whitaker, Beamont Clarke or Benjamin down. He did it with Dobbin last season?
Even in Whitakers case, we put Mackenzie Hunt & Lewis Warrington both on the bench last season with no real intention to keep them on past the end of the season

Maybe it was just a case of Southampton is a long way to travel and it might of been a bit different if we were at home were its easier to throw someone in to a last minute call up.

With the likes of Whitaker it's better for him to show he's absolutely dominant in the 21s than sitting on a bench with 0 chance of getting on imo. Broadhead managed to get a great move for himself doing the same. In my experience the scouts put more weight into that than token bench spots.

He was wanted by a good few L1/2 teams on loan when he got injured

With the greatest of respect, why should we be bothered about what sort of move they get?

Its good to see a lot of our academy players around the football league and further afield, but its a very Martinez thing to say
'They will all have careers in football'

when picking what club to join a lot of kids and their parents will look at how Everton treat all the players not just the less than 1% that make it to the first team.

It would be better if Everton offered Charlie another twelve month contract and see if he is good enough to make it with us instead of going onto other clubs and proving his worth and value elsewhere, that’s if Charlie, his family and agent want to stay with Everton or gamble on getting a better deal with another club.

Hmmmmm, i'm not to sure on that.

I don't think a parent will look at there 9 year old son being courted by Everton, Liverpool & Man Utd and think.............he can become Callum Connelly
