Everton Youth Teams Thread

Yep mentioned above. He came on for about 15/20 minutes and looked well off it.

Really hard circumstances coming into a game against one of the best sides in the league in a new country but he looked very very raw.
Indeed. My impression of Gomez was of him running around everywhere at 100 mph a bit like a kid joining the grown ups trying to impress.

These though are the players that you look to see if our coaches can improve them via decent training and coaching . There are others too. Tamen looks a decent sized unit who can be developed alongside Welch in matches; Ebere is the same now as two years ago pacy, strong, direct with little end product as he doesn’t get his head up; Boakye I’m not sure about yet, throw in Benjamin and Graham as kids with great potential but way off the first team and we’ve got a group in the u21s crying out to be developed further. Some though will have gone as far as they can and won’t progress beyond u21s with us.

I enjoyed last nights game, it was typical of many u21s , not wildly exciting , showing once again the huge gap between them and the first team , but good to see some new players.

Thought harry Howell for them looks a really good prospect at 16.ebere has been blighted with injuries the last couple of seasons and hopefully a good run at u21s we see some improvements

Just don’t see it with Tamen myself. He’s all physicality and not much else. Bit of the opposite of some of our older defenders like Feeney and Astley were.

Was a good runout for our lads against a technically much better side. Gomez needs time and maybe we’ll see why he was brought in.

Agree on Tamen, there’s something there but he looked really limited with the ball.

Ebere isn’t going to go beyond where he is now unless his decision making improves, had a superb run last night beating two at pace and instead of rolling Graham in he tried a shot from about 25 yards.

Howell is one of the best in the country at his age, real prospect.

I can see it tbf, he’s ridiculously raw but he’s a proper unit and he’s quick. I just don’t know if you can improve someone THAT much in possession. Looked really poor.

You’ve summed up why we’ve gone for someone like that though, Feeney and Astley were never going to step up physically (Tierney probably the same). Tamen has that already.

Yep Feeney , Astley and now Welch are good “ measuring sticks “ for young CBs , we remember them and know new prospects will have to be better than them to progress with us .
Someone mentioned Gibson recently, you’ve mentioned Moonan , my big disappointment was Astley, when I saw him as a 16 year old playing in the u23s my heart was convinced he’d be playing for Wales when he was 21. Kids eh 🤷‍♂️

I think the issue for all mentioned above has been physicality. None progressed from when they were 16/17. Welch is a big lad but so slight and not quick.

You look at players now who make it in defence in the premier league and they’re all athletes. It’s one reason I can see Thomas having a chance.

It’s why Dixon has an outside chance too.

Astley, and Feeney, just never bulked out. I don’t get it though, why don’t we hammer these lads in the gym? It’s hardly difficult to add size to them.

…improvement in possession can certainly improve with time, it’s why clubs endlessly do those sessions with one player chasing the ball in the middle of a circle. Touch is something that can also improve with time.

If the physicality is there, then there’s certainly something to work on.

Ha, I know I repeat this on a regular basis, I’ve watched a lot of u18/u20 rugby internationals over the years and even the backs have been bulked up or they wouldn’t make it, yet these same backs are still speedy and highly mobile . It’s a strange , they must have their reasons , you can’t turn them into a Branthwaite but you could certainly improve their physicality a lot.

Reminds me of Gordon basically doing all the bulking out on his own before his breakout season.
I think Gordon’s attitude was exceptional in many ways, always seeking to improve himself, being brazen enough to knock on Carlo’s door etc , he made/ makes the most of his talent compared to other talented youngsters , and I always quote Kieran Dowell here!

Yeh it’s not like they were rapid and scared they’d slow down or anything 😂 always baffles me.

Lots of chat about Dixon's potential/ability to make it recently, and it brings to mind the Antonee Robinson debate going on atm. He was similarly thought of iirc as a youth player, fast but lacking quality defensively. Is Dixon close to his level back then? Could he develop as well as Robinson has?
why don’t we hammer these lads in the gym?
