Everton Youth Teams Thread

Have to wonder how many players there are in academies/youth teams/on loan in lower leagues that could make the step up if given the chance. Rashford, Kane, Coquelin have all become mainstays in the first team recently. Don't know about Rashford but neither Kane nor Coquelin looked anything particularly special while out on loan either.

I made a point a few months ago that the loan system should be considered just as much about character building then someone going to a lower division and setting the world alight. Most of the lads go out boys and are forced to turn into men, fighting and playing for every point each week.

Some go out and make the step up, some can't. I look at Walsh, his stature and everything said to me he wouldn't make it in the league he is playing in and he is bossing it and has absolutely the right temperament to make it.

Let them go out, build character and turn into proper men and players, am not worried about them setting their leagues alight - they can come back and then boss it.

i dont think we should be sending all our players out, what happened to managers having the balls to give them a go at their own club.
obviously each case is different, fergie didnt feel the need to send scholes or the nevilles etc out on loan but did it with beckham very briefly.

I think we've all been violently agreeing about Dowell for some time , inconceivable that he doesn't get some PL minutes this season ... err isn't it? Great to see his confidence , and ability is so high to try that shot with his right foot.

I , like many, have to take what I can from the highlights and these often exaggerate our perceptions, we see the great goals from the attackers and the mistakes from defenders. So it was nice to read Unsy saying it was Holgate's best game since he joined. Last game against Middlesbrough he gifted them their first goal with a poor back pass and if you're being harsh it was a weak header out by him that led to the Norwich goal. My perception was that with such mistakes he couldn't be risked at PL level, but he's obviously got something in his game.
It was also nice to see first U21 appearances for Brewster, Baningime and Holland.

In the same vein, highlights of the u18 win against Blackburn highlighted the potential of young Shayne Lavery, his run and cross caused the own goal and his run and strike scored the second. Again all highlights but backing up previous highlights of him as someone to watch at u18/21 next season.

yep like i say it should be player by player basis - some young lads need that kick up the arse and rough it in a lower league to be turned into players.

Some just have the ability and that knack and temperament that they should be given a go.

Lavery is the one that came over from Ireland on trial and scored 4 goals in one game. It'll be interesting to see how he progresses in the next few years.

Rashford is no better than james vaughan was at that age. But he got a chance and took it.
If anything it would give martinez abit of bresthing space with the fans (just s tiny bit though).
Any manager in the country would of brought ross n stones through, who else has he given time too? Garbutt and browning? Who are both aproaching 22.
This is what worrys me if we go out and spend, a bigger squad means less places for the kids when injurys occur.
Under moyes we kept a young squad and produced the likes of osman, hibbert, rodwell, vaughan, anichebe and barkley because they got a chance when ijurys occured

moyes was no better at giving youngsters a chance though i dont think he had the talent we currently do at youth level.

But moyes never had a squad the size that martinez has 'built'.
He had a core of 17/18 players and if he got injurys he would have to rely on youth.
What im saying is that under moyes it seemed you were more likely to get a chance as you would only need maybe 2/3 players injured. Under martinez you would need 7/8 players missing to maybe get in the matchday squad

id say the list you put up for moyes was absolutely pathetic for over 10 yrs at a club to be honest.

Yes I wish I could watch more of them it's difficult to gauge how good they are from the limited coverage. I watched Arsenal v city last night on itv4 in the youth cup semi final & thought there were some cracking players involved & enjoyed the game more than any of the weekends 3 live premier league games I watched. I hope our young players are as good I'm sure we will find out more in the coming weeks once the league is finalised.

If we want to develop and get academy players into the first team I think it needs to be a philosophy adopted by the club from the very top and they need to recruit a manager with a certain skillset. I don't think Martinez is that man.
