Everton Under-18s collected their first league win of the season, thrashing Derby County 6-1 at Finch Farm.

The young Toffees produced a stunning second-half performance, scoring four times to comprehensively beat the Rams.

Despite a slow start, Everton took the lead after just 10 minutes. Shayne Laverypounced on an under-hit back-pass from Michee Mbuti and coolly finished under the legs of Matt Yates in the Derby goal.

Ten minutes later and Lavery went close to get his and Everton’s second. The forward broke through the County defence and just when it looked like he was ready to pull the trigger, Derby’s Joseph Bateman got back and produced a superb tackle to deny an almost certain goal.

However, on 24 minutes, the young Rams levelled in an impressive manner. Everton failed to clear Jordan Mills’ cross, with the ball eventually falling to Henry Wise on the edge of the Blues box. The midfielder controlled on his chest before unleashing a right-footed volley which flew into the bottom corner of the net.

Five minutes before the half-time interval, Sheedy’s side regained the lead. Beni Baningime pounced on a loose ball before finding Lavery. The forward, with his back to goal, then released a brilliant through ball for Manasse Mampala who coolly composed himself before side-footing the ball past Yates.

The young Blues started the second half in sparkling fashion, scoring four times in an incredible 20-minute spell.

Everton’s third of the game arrived in the 50th minute. A neat pass by Daniel Bramall was collected by Antony Evans, who took a touch before firing home.

Four minutes later, and the Toffees scored another. This time Evans advanced down the right and crossed for captain Callum Lees to head home at the back post.

Sheedy’s side now had their tails up and went close to adding a fifth whenMorgan Feeney connected with Bramall’s corner, but the centre-back’s header was superbly tipped over by Yates.

But from the resulting corner Everton did make it five - Bramall again sent over another cross and Lees was perfectly placed to double his own tally for the afternoon.

The young Blues were full of confidence and streamed forward at every given opportunity, and just two minutes later they made it 6-1.

Evans’ free-kick was headed against his own bar by Jordan Mills, the ball then canoed back and fell perfectly for Lavery, who fired in his second of the game from inside the six-yard box.

The young Toffees went close to a seventh, with Lavery this time turning provider. A sweeping counter-attacking move from Sheedy’s side saw Lavery release substitute Stephen Duke-McKenna, but the forward’s effort was well blocked by Yates.

The final chance of the game fell the way of the visitors. Cameron Creswell intercepted Ryan Harrington’s crossfield ball, although the winger’s low drive was pushed round the post by Renshaw.

Speaking after the game to evertonfc.com Blues boss Kevin Sheedy was delighted with his team’s dominant display.

“It was an excellent performance” said Sheedy. “We were slow to get going but in the last 25 minutes of the first half we improved, especially once we realised that both our wingers had the beating of their two full-backs.

“In the second half we were excellent. We came back out and had a devastating eight-minute spell where we have scored four goals. We had some excellent individual performances but most of all it was a good team performance.”

Next up for the young Blues is the mini-Merseyside derby away at Liverpool - and Sheedy believes Everton will go into the game full of confidence after collecting their first win.

“I always look forward to them - they are always good games” added Sheedy. “We can take a lot of confidence from today. But like I’ve just told the players come Monday it’s all about working hard again and making sure we are prepared to go again next weekend.”

Everton: Renshaw; Morris, Harrington, Baningime, Lees ©, Feeney, Bramall, Kiersey, Lavery, Evans Mampala (Subs: Pierce, Denny, Duke-McKenna, Hornby, Moore).

Looks like all the 2nd year scholars played today including Feeney, Baningime and Evans and the results have improved.
Yeah only Mampala of the outfield players is a first year, with four of the better players returning for , I think, their first games this season at u18. In the past few games there have been names , like Michael Collins , playing who are not even Scholars so probabably a schoolboy and as you say adding experience has improved the result .
