Everton Youth Teams Thread

The U18s derby next week is probably another nightmare as the current U18s team is the worst one for years.
Me , I'm a glass half full kinda guy, I see 3 u18s playing regularly for the u23s, two having represented their country last week, then there's another four also representing their country with one of them scoring . I'll dismiss the GK and one other, but that leaves five "reasonable" chances at their age , given they're all 17 or 16 . So there's a "reasonable" chance that two from five will get first team squad experience at some time. We clearly don't have strength in depth but two would do me from this crop.

From your statement it appears you have an advantage over me and many others who haven't seen the u18s play this season and you obviously have. It would be great if you could add some depth to your comment and say which positions and which players you've seen are particularly weak, cheers.

We're not going to be on our own looking at City's academy. I think the RS already signed a couple during the summer. Plus we are most likely going to be picking up their cast-offs, which is fine as long as they're better than what we already have.
City u18 beat the RS 7-0 the other week , possibly the week after they beat us 3-1. It's hard to tell at this level from week to week , we lost 8-0 at home to Wolves last season then a few weeks later beat Newcastle 8-0 away. The three defeats have been against teams in the current top 4 of the u18 league. Being 2nd from bottom looks pretty poor , no denying that , and if our squad is really that poor then Sheedy needs to work with them to eliminate weaknesses and if necessary attract some 17 year olds in positions of weakness in January, as we did buying Matty Foulds last season.

I'm not overly concerned with the under 18s to be honest mate. There already appears to be a bit of a bottleneck in the under 23s from last years under 18s influx. Unsy is finding it hard giving everyone game time as it is.

I'm more concerned about the younger lads coming through the academy. We're notorious for keeping these guys out of the limelight which is great, but normally you get snippets of info but I'm not hearing much at all of late.

Better bet is to find players in the lower leagues who have had more chances than the city kids and show that they can handle first team football.

Probably right. The gems we've unearthed so far have been from lower leagues.

Makes you question how successful the big club academies are

Academies sweep up anyone and everyone with a hint of talent or advanced physicality in fear they'll miss out on the next Messi, Ronaldo, Bale etc. It's a horrible business as tons of kids with potential just get bottlenecked and disappear out of the game.

Its like hiring kids from oxford or cambridge etc.....theres always a genius hidden away elsewhere.

Well after an excellent Monday night it's the u23s tonight. I think I can guess 10 of the starters against Middlesborough but only got 7 of ths team. Apart from Joel they're all u21 so no probs playing Davies and Holgate . Good to see Kenny in his favoured position , a chance for him to impress RK, chance for Connolly to impress too in yet another different CB combination. Quite a strong team , arguably one of our strongest at this level, and Sunderland have been strong the last 2 years so should be a good contest.

#EFCU23 XI (to play Sunderland): Joel, Kenny (c), Robinson, Davies, Connolly, Holgate, Charsley, Walsh, Dyson, Calvert-Lewin. Dowell. #PL2

Any further thoughts to add to the OS report mate? Seems we dominated but failed to finish?
First half was all Everton. Holgate was starting attacks at will from centre half. Dowell wrongfooted the keeper from a free kick that he nearly squeezeed in. For all the first half dominance we didn't make too many clear chances. Second half was more even, Davies shined second half though. We made a few clear chances but we couldnt take any. Joel's mistake for the goal wasn't great either.
