Everton Youth Teams Thread

Excellent news, was very impressed with him in Ireland last year. It will be intriguing to see how he fits into Koeman's plans as he certainly doesn't fit the powerful running style that seems to be the preferred player.

You know, this alone could be key for him. He can offer something different to the first team squad.

Not that this necessarily has any relation to what Koeman wants at Everton, but Walsh has a lot of similarities with that Clasie who Koeman absolutely loves. In terms of style/stature.

Good call that. I suppose it shows that when the right player comes along the manager will find a way to accommodate them. One thing that will go in Walsh's favour is that he certainly isn't shy about putting a foot in. Im not old enough to remember him myself but an older Blue told me that Walsh reminds him of Johnny Giles, the former Leeds and Ireland player- small in stature but classy with an iron will. Sounds alright to me.

you're not wrong about him liking to put a foot in, needs to cut out getting the red cards!

Liam Walsh being kept on is excellent news now we need Jonjoe Kenny sorted and I'll be happy. A few of the others should get contracts but they are my main 2.

To keep our feet on the ground though, the record of youth internationals progressing to the senior England team is pretty awful. Even teams that do well in European competitions seldom get more than a couple from the squad progressing to full honours. I'm not sure how our (England's) track record compares to other nations but it does kinda suggest the pipeline is broken somewhere.

If you look at Baines and Jags, for instance, neither played for England until under 21 level, whilst Gareth Barry won > 50 caps for the senior team without turning out at all for any of the youth sides.
Yes indeed, the number of youths who make it to full cap is low and the further back you start I.e. at u16 level , the less likelihood of making it. But at the end of the process, u21 level, virtually all these players are going to ,or have , played at PL level . A few won't and a few will play Championship .

Re your "To keep our feet on the ground" , I find this thread probabably the best balanced on GOT, regulars and even occasional posters rarely go over the top or have unrealistic expectations , its realised at 19/18 years old there's a long way to go. It's when they get their own thread that my eyes start to roll at the comments made , Domic Calvert-Lewin will be the next one .

Completely agree.

Whilst it would be nice to produce premier league player after player it may not happen however it's nice to know we are producing professional footballers.

Not sure how we compare to other clubs but we must be doing well since finch farm's inception.

For me if your a parent with a talented son you must think even if he doesn't make a Prem player at Everton they will give him what he needs to be a professional at a lower level & he can make a career for himself.

Really really hope Walsh makes it. His style of play (from the little I've seen) is right up my street. Scrappy midfielder with special feet and good vision.
From the little I've seen of Walsh, he looks like a 'scholes' type player. Diminutive in stature, but technically very good with a lovely passing range. Contract is a nice reward for the lad, but as they say the hard work starts now.

This is something I've noticed too, and Scholes was one of my favourite players to watch in the Prem ever - in terms of 'type', like you say.
