Everton Youth Teams Thread

I wonder how this leaves defending our Liverpool and Lancashire senior cup titles.

It's a very large squad Unsy has so I suppose there's no reason why we can't.

Also, a lot of our under 18s squad that moved up this year are struggling for game time at the moment. Most, if not all of these will still qualify for the F A youth cup this season. Do you think there's a chance we might do this to give the lads some more playing time, rather than play the current under 18s group. This is a very prestigious competition and our 18 year olds would stand every chance of winning it such is their quality. Plus it's all about getting that winning mentality.

In recent years we haven't really mate. I'd be surprised to see Evans, Feeney or Baningime (all under 18's) playing and maybe Kiersey as well.

How is Matty Foulds getting on ? Is he playing as a centre back ?

I know the manager/coach of Bury u18's and he was raving about him, said he is a great lad.

Yes I know. But for the last 3 years we've had a very competitive under 18 squad who would have been expected to perform well in the competition. I don't believe this years squad is quite at the same level. Plus this year, we have an unusually large under 23 squad and, so far, Unsy has struggled to give much playing time to some of the stars from last years under 18s.

The following all qualify for this seasons competition. Lavery, Lees, Feeney, Foulds, Donohue, Sambou, Baningime, Broadhead, Brewster, Holland, Yarney, Davies, Evans and Bainbridge.

Many of these won't play regular football this year so why not play them in the Youth Cup. It would be great to win it, or at least have a really good run in the competition. Most of the under 18s are only 16/17 so will still be able to participate next season.

Why do you say that mate, I'm curious? Last season , from memory so may be wrong, we played Connolly , Davies Dowell and Walsh in the Youth Cup loss to Aston Villa when at the time they were mainly U21s.

The problem this time is we don't have the strength of depth we had last year at u18s. Then we could take out the four mentioned who were playing u 21s and still have another four decent players at u18s in Brewster, Broadhead , Holland ! Yates. Now if we take out the four you've mentioned( Evans, Feeney, Baningime and Kiersey) who I don't think have played at u18s this season then you've pretty much taken out the cream of this crop, except Lavery , maybe Lees. Given the strength of the u23 squad I'd be tempted to play all four in the Youth Cup , with the right draw they could get a good run going giving some confidence to the 1st year Scholars who are playing.

Sorry mate but a large chunk of those won't qualify as its under 18 on 1September birth date. Think in terms of the 2015 intake , now 2nd year Scholars, so only Lavery, Lees, Feeney, Baningime and Evans from your list. Add in Jack Kiersey , Danny Bramall , and Ryan Harrington and then it's probabably down to 1st year Scholars for the other places.

Always thought it was up to and including age 18 as at Sept 1st. Never mind.

I agree with you. The current crop need the lads who are with the under 23 squad if we're to be in any way competitive this year.

Maybe another one, Fraser Hornby , to add to the u18 discussion . He looked OK in a televised match for Scotland u17s end of last season, has now moved up to Scotland u19s and scored for them yesterday.

Still only 16 years old. I think he could become quite good. Tall, good in the air, protects the back four well and can also play a bit based on the one match that I have seen him play :)

They did all play but most of them were still going between teams at that stage. Also I remember them having to play for the under 21's a couple of nights before. My gut feeling though is that with the increase of competitive football and matches at under 23 they will try to keep that squad together.

Final one . It's interesting that Lavery is playing up a couple of teams , but not unexpected with the nations that are weaker at youth level. In the same context, I was expecting Nathan Broadhead to maybe move up to Wales u21s as they are pretty weak at the moment , so it was a surprise to see that he didn't start for the u19s . Broadhead's a strange one to call, lots of goals at U18 level and looked sharp against people his own age ..... but nobody , including Unsy, are so far taking the chance and moving him up a level.

⚽️ | Shayne Lavery played 75 minutes but couldn't prevent @NorthernIreland Under-21s from falling to a 2-0 loss.

Is it that Broadhead maybe isn't deemed ready/good enough or that the U23 squad is pretty huge and they're worried about diluting the U18's too much and leaving them with a rather poor team for their league campaign?

Have to think it's a bit of the former plus as you say a big, and good, u23 squad, Broadhead is no longer eligible for u18s . I guess you can judge how Unsy and others perceive our strength at U23s from transfer activity in past few months - two forwards brought in Sambou and Calvert-Lewin, one promising midfielder , Ledson, let go.

I haven't seen anything of the U18s of note this season but after 3 defeats people seem to have written them off. Still time for Sheedy to get them back on track, and accepting we don't have strength in depth at u18 you only need one to make the breakthrough . This time last year ManUtd u18s were pretty poor and that Rashford guy was not exactly setting the u18 League alight with his goals........

Possibly. I'm a bit annoyed the likes of McAleny are getting game time like vs Bolton when Broadhead isn't. We seem to have bottlenecked a lot of talent in the U23's this season since none of them bar Holgate are now "permanently" with the first team. I suspect January a lot of loans will be arranged for 6 months.
