Everton Youth Teams Thread

...Fraser Hornby might be another who pushes forward, not least because we paid money for him and he looks like he could cope physically. Perhaps one to watch but others will have a more informed view than me.
Hornby was pretty cheap at £65k as we got him as a 15 year old , according to the complicated paystructure at the time he would cost us £1.3 mill if he plays 100 PL games , I'll gladly pay that, Henen , Bassala , Tarashaj , Calvert -Lewin have all cost more.

I read that we signed him as a midfielder, but woth all the goals he's banging in im assuming we are playing him as a striker. Can anyone confirm?

Yeah signed as a midfielder , and the first glimpse most of us had of him was about six months ago playing for Scotland u17s as a defensive midfielder and looking reasonable in a languid kind of way. Then he because a 1st year Scholar in June , designated a midfielder, all be it one with a reputation for goals. He seems to have had a growth spurt, he was always big but is now our biggest at u18s outfielder I'd say. It looks like they pushed him from a defensive to an attacking midfielder a few months ago and now even further forward as a striker as he started scoring goals.
Looking at yesterday's game against City he did move about a bit , but was certainly in the striker positions when his goals were scored, a stooping header for the first, an easy leap to tower above the defenders and power in his header for his second and a diagonal run across the box to be brought down by their GK for his third from the spot. At times he looks a bit like Antony Evans , tall thin , shock of black hair , playing up front . 11 goals so far this season , but still only 17 , 1st year Scholar. It will be interesting to see how far he progresses this season, probably more likely to play for Scotland u21s than our U23s.

To be honest I'm kinda of thinking I wished we'd given Unsworth a chance instead of Koeman
Part of me wants to see Unsworth given a chance even though it isn't really practical with no actual experience. The only way I can see it happening is for him to be caretaker and do too well to not continue on but that also means someone getting sacked which is bad

Speaking of which.. havent seen his name in u23 nor u18 for a bit? Have I not been concentrating (which I haven't to be fair owing to our recent downturn) or has he not been playing. He is up there with Liam in my talent hierarchy of players.

I would put Walsh's name on my shirt next season just to send a message. We all should except everyone would go congratulate Steve.

Been saying for a good 12-18 months now for these kids to get a decent go of 1st team football, our first team squad numbers need to deplete immensely.
If you look at the amount of first team squad members we have accumulated over the years over 21 we have 27 players, that is 11 starters, 7 subs + another 9 squad members for injury's and suspensions.
In some positions we have back up and then backup for the backup (Gibson, Barry, Gueye, McCarthy, Cleverley, Besic) 6 players for 2 positions. Even with 3 injurys and a suspension it is unlikely Davies or Walsh will get game time in that position.
If you look at Calvert Lewin, done a good job for u23s, got a place on the bench v West Ham with Valencia ineligible. Then took off the bench the minute Valencia (a bog standard squad player who offers nothing) is available again, same case for Davies when Cleverley & McCarthy returned from injury.
The path to the 1st team is blocked with players who are not good enough for our first team.
Its easier said then done to just ditch them all though, who will take them off our hands? Oviedo signed a new 3 year contract lat year, Gibson signed a new 2 year deal in the summer? We have had the opportunity to cut the squad numbers down and not took it.
With Koeman mentioning he wants 3 or 4 players in for January then that will just move average 1st team players to the bench and the kids further down the pecking order.
I have always admired the way Pochetino has gone about squad building at saints & spurs, pretty much he buys in players for the 1st team and has a core squad of about 16/17 players then the rest of his squad he fills with acadamy lads. Harry Winks on Saturday was another good example

He's come from absolutely nowhere hasn't he.

Shown an aptitude for goal scoring that comes naturally to players which is probably why he's been getting pushed further forward as the season has progressed.

Interesting to see him competing with Evans for that "off the striker" position.

all 3 should be getting minutes with the first team

That's the problem

Jags has been poor and Holgate can't get a look in despite his promising start and Davies isn't even included in a squad that includes the ever under performing Tom cleverly.

Koeman recycles the same under-performing senior players every 2 weeks.

If he's not going to give the young lads time then let them go on loan and get first team experience. Especially Davies
