Everton Youth Teams Thread

Not a very good performance from your boys - very much over matched in every aspect of the game and the scoreline could have been worse.

For as good as Brewster was last year in this tournament, he barely got a touch in the match yesterday. I would be surprised if he touched the ball half a dozen times before being taken off. It wasn't necessarily down to him, he had absolutely zero service.

Not really a consolation, but this FC Dallas side is often mentioned as possibly being the best American youth side - ever. There are 6 or 7 youth internationals with 3 very special players.

FC Dallas’s U18/U19 academy team opened Gordon Jago SuperGroup play with a merciless drubbing of Everton’s academy team. Even without Bryan Reynolds, who is in residency with the US U17s in preparation for CONCACAF U17 World Cup qualifying, FCD’s academy team featured three players on pro contracts and at least six players who have participated in the US Youth National Teams.

In the first half, FCDY pressed mercilessly, and were rewarded with an opener in the 17th minute. Jesus Ferreira cut through three defenders in the box and unleashed a hard shot that the Everton keeper could only parry as far as Shaft Brewer, who easily tapped in to make it 1-0. Dallas continued to press, and Shaft turned provider in the 36th minute winning a ball deep in Everton’s half and setting up Paxton Pomykal for a clinical finish to increase the lead to two.

In the opening minutes of the 2nd half, last year’s SuperGroup champs Everton generated their best chance of the match to that point with a shot just wide of the top corner. This had the effect of immediately refocusing the gents from Frisco, and the buzzing attack returned as if it never left. A stinging shot from Jesus led to a corner which was taken short to Jesus who weaved through Everton’s defense and served up Brecc Evans to make it 3-0. Not long after that target striker, absolute menace, and future Yale Bulldog Aldo Quevedo pounced on a mistake at the back and slotted in the 4th from 17 yards out.

Around five minutes later, Ferreira finally got his. In an almost mirror image of the 1st goal, Brewer cut through the defense to challenge the keeper. This time the rebound fell to Ferreira, and he made no mistake in the 65th minute. After the 5th, FC Dallas made six substitutions over the course of about 10 minutes. Everton finally tested Mercedo in the 83rd minute, but he was up to the challenge with an impressive save from inside the six yard box. Everton managed one last chance that was slowed by Mercedo enough to be cleared off the line, and FCDY held on for the clean sheet and an auspicious opening to Dallas Cup.

Like @bpet15 said, this result is probably equal parts FCD is good (probably the best American academy) and EFC's side is relatively weak.

Also, FCD did not feature their 15 year old First Teamer in this match.

Everton’s Under-19s suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of FC Dallas in their opening Dallas Cup group game.

The young Blues are back in the States to defend the crown they won here back in April 2016, but if they are to do so, they will have to follow in their own example one year ago.

Having lost to Tigres in their opening game, Everton went on to lift the trophy 12 months prior.

Ahead of this game, coach Kevin Sheedy warned his players to expect a fast start from their local opponents – and that is precisely what they got.

On 18 minutes, Dallas opened the scoring – Ben Pierce brilliantly denied Jesus Ferreira Castro but Shaft Brewer was on hand to tap the ball into an empty net.

Everton were struggling to mount any kind of assault of their own, but did briefly threaten in the first half as Delial Brewster almost turned in Alex Denny’s header back across goal, then Daniel Bramall blasted over the bar.

But Paxton Pomykal made it two when side-footing a volley into the bottom corner on 37 minutes, leaving it 2-0 at the interval.

Further goals followed after the break. Brecc Evans netted from close range, before Aldo Quevedo and Castro struck in quick succession to make it five.

Everton can look to bounce back immediately however, when they take on Israel’s Maccabi Haifa on Monday.

Kevin Sheedy has told his Under-19s side to bounce back quickly from their Dallas Cup defeat to FC Dallas when they take on Maccabi Haifa.

Everton have little time to dwell on the loss in their opening game of the tournament – they play their second fixture inside 24 hours.

Sheedy has called for a big response from his charges, who know a loss would end their involvement in the tournament.

“We have got to bounce back immediately,” he said. “We now have a massive game against Maccabi Haifa on Monday which is now a must-win one. If we don’t then we are out of the competition.

“This situation has happened to us before – we lost the first game last year but went on to win the next two. So we have to show some character, roll our sleeves up and put the disappointment of the Dallas game behind us. We want to put things right.

“It was a disappointing performance. We didn’t look right from the first whistle. We have had an horrendous journey over and it showed in the first 20 minutes where we couldn’t get near them and found ourselves 2-0 down.”

The young Blues will face a much different test when they face the side from Israel. But Sheedy is only focused on seeing a reaction from his side.

“I expect Maccabi to be technically very good. We were going to watch them after our game but it was cancelled so we have not watched them.

“I am expecting them to be really athletic and technically very good as I say. But I am focusing more on what we do – we have to start passing the ball, getting close to players to win the ball back and looking a threat in front of goal.”

We started day three here in Texas at 9 o’clock with breakfast, before having our team meeting for our first game against FC Dallas.

We went through some clips on how they attacked, how they defended and what to expect from their set-pieces. Our game was at midday so it was quickly back to our rooms to get changed and to grab our boots and gear.

We then travelled to the Cotton Bowl and as soon as we got there the lads went to have a look around the pitch. The stadium was massive and the surface was in really good condition.

I have been lucky enough to play at some really big and well-known stadiums but the Cotton Bowl was one of the biggest I have played in. There was a decent crowd there and it was a confidence booster to see how many people turned up to see us play.

Unfortunately the game didn’t go our way but for all of us, especially those who haven’t gone to Dallas before like me, it was good to get out there and see what it was about and get started. We played better in the second half but the damage was done by then.

For me, it was great to get onto the pitch, despite the result, and hopefully I can make an impact in the next game against Maccabi Haifa.

That is who we play later today. We all want to bounce back from the defeat to Dallas. We know the team that came out here last season lost their first game but went on to win the tournament, so hopefully we can do the same.

We are a good group of lads. We are disappointed with the result but we will stick together.

Actually, if you are speaking of Jesus Ferreira who turned 16 in December, he did feature. He played as #7 and set up the first goal that required a great save but then followed up and he scored the final goal.

There were 3 FC Dallas players playing in this tournament that are part of the first team set up.
