Some committment that on the ferries, did you even get any sleep? I guess everyone must have ended up knowing each other really well. I guess when the added interest took off in the 50s with Farrell etc it must have been in the hundreds similar to now.
There was proper Duty Free back then, and that included the bar prices which were roughly half the then prices onshore!!, Bar opened from as soon as the boat left the North Wall in Dublin until about 1.15. We would then grab a few hours stretched out under stairs, or on the benches in the canteen - cabins were too pricey for most of us! On arrival in Liverpool it was a free feeder bus to Lime Street, then down to some greasy spoon for breakfast, a read of the morning papers, followed by a quick bit of shopping, and then wait for opening time at 11.30.
Winslow before and after the game, then we all met up in the Midland before back to Lime Street for the reverse journey.
We arrived bleary eyed in Dublin at 7.30 on Sunday morning with booze clinking in the Duty Free bags!
For the Bayern game, many did not make the boat in time after the game....but I don't think they were too bothered!!
