If a Premier League club (or a club of equivalent size) names a player in an ongoing police investigation, a lawyer would argue that they've mobilised their sizable fanbase against the player, therefore jeopardising the chance of a fair trial. Everton absolutely should NOT be naming any names, whether to confirm who it is or deny who it isn't (thereby confirming who it is via elimination).

To be fair to Delph I don't think Everton should have released a statement of any kind, given than media reports only went as far as "Premier League club".

that would have been the most sensible alternative. And surely a lawyer could argue the cat is basically out the bag with that statement anyway.

the media confirmed the same player who was suspended, was the player being investigated, so, the reports have gone further than that.
 
Unfortunate but the club didn’t announce the age, and he could have simply announced on social media that it wasn’t him.
 

Think the fact he played on Saturday might have been a hint he wasn't involved. But as others have said, his ego won't allow him to believe the world does not revolve around him.
And crying to that rag as well, do what we can to be rid of him this Summer

But it wasn't the clubs fault he was a close contact and if he had gone to America this would never have happened.

I think he may have been told he can leave the RB and is now creating a story around why he is choosing to leave just to save face.

Agree that hes probably been told to find a new club and his agent is now attempting to create a narrative about how a donkey sicknote is available for free.
 
He should genuinely retire, he can't play even double figures a season. if anyone else is daft enough it would need to be pay as you play, I'd be interested how often he'd be injured then.
 

Think the best we can hope for is that someone will pay half of his wages to take him on loan for the season. It's hard to imagine anyone wanting him even on that basis though.

Anyone who read enough of the story to know it was a 31yr old player, would also know that player was arrested by the police and suspended by the club and would've not been able to play for us at the weekend, which Delph did (had a good game too, so I'm told). Everton had to put a statement out, if only to avoid being accused of some sort of cover-up.

Now, you've had your say and I've had mine. Let's leave it there and not further discuss a matter that involves an ongoing investigation, as per the site rules ;)
