We had hit a brick wall, but in truth the squad and team we had at the back end of Martinez's season was closer to winning things than how I feel now. I'd also say, the appearance of Moshiri destabilised that team and probably deepened the fall out from that particular season.

What can't be denied is Moshiri has put a large amount of money in, that should not be doubted or underestimated. However at some point I think he has to look inwardly to ask if he's done enough outside of that. We still have the same chairman nearly 4 years on. A chairman who had not presided over a football club that had any real desire to be the "best of the rest". He cajoled the club to that target successfully. However in his previous 16 years in charge of the club, nothing suggested he would be capable of running a club that had ambitions beyond that. He has been retained for the duration of the time Moshiri has been here.

Part of me feels a bit sorry for Moshiri, but part of me thinks, if you go out on a massive limb, and allow someone who patently doesn't have the skill to execute your plan to remain in control of an organisation you are pouring money into then it's most likely going to be money down the drain. Not only that but you are centrally to blame for it.

Until the club resembles someone like say, Dortmund, Monaco, Leipzig (or the other RB chain), Ajax etc off the pitch with that degree of ruthlessness, efficiency and clarity of thinking then we will continue to suffer. We still don't spend money massively efficiently. It's got better under Brands, but if we get a new manager what happens if he doesn't like some of the signings brought in?

Hes not blameless nor is he perfect, but hes trying "harder" than any owner we have ever had.

Moyes got 4th-7th consistently and a cup final which is way better than Martinez, who get found out in his 2nd, 3rd season as a bottom half manager.

I think we have to compartmentalise what Moshiri has done into two broad sections. On the one hand the money he has put in, and on the other how he has led/the decisions that have been made.

He has put an enormous amount of money in and for that he deserves credit. You are right to say the first owner since John Moores to do this, and he has injecting capital on a far more philanthropic manner than him. However money alone doesn't solve a football club or a business. Thats the great myth of the Kenwright era that he managed to cultivate, that Everton were well run they were just unfortunate in not having enough money. Unfortunately it looks as if Moshiri has bought this nonsense. In the process of the last 3 years, we've also lost the few positive things we had going for us then, so the extra capital we have available has just meant we sit still.

I understand that people turn their nose up at a Wilder, or a Dyche but I do wonder on what basis. Look if we can get a top coach get them, but if not I am increasingly coming to the viewpoint that getting a coach who knows the domestic leagues inside out and can emulate what Moyes did in the early days may not go amiss. Ideally someone slightly less objectionable than Allardyce would do.

As I've said, money alone is a small part of it. Look at the mess United are in, having spent more money than anyone else.

Yes I agree mate. I wasn't contrasting Martinez to Moyes, just Martinez's final season, which was disastrous compared to his previous 2 to what we now have. It's remarkable that we have not moved forward in those times, and to me we were closer to winning a trophy then than we are now. This set of players would not go to Bournemouth and win a cup tie, never mind defeat the double winners Chelsea in a quarter final. We are a million miles off that standard. In truth in the League cup run that season we won at Middlesborough who were top of the championship, I wouldn't fancy us in a game like that currently.

Don't even get me started on where we were under Moyes! The team and platform Moyes left is substantially above the one we have now.

We were standing still
Nope, we werent standing still.

With Moyes we were the best of the rest, then Martinez took us to the bottom half, we were in major decline.
Moyes 7, 17, 4, 11, 5, 5, 8, 7, 7, 6. = 7.8 average
We were running as fast as we could it just appeared we were standing still
Not very often best of the rest.
Due to many factors; Moyes himself and a lack of cash

Now we're not running as fast as we can and it appears we're going backwards - and we are.

It's all excuses with Toshiri. He's been here for 3 years and we've lurched from one disaster to another.

In all honesty I have to say that if we'd have had Kenwright in charge and kept Moyes or Martinez and handed them the cash from the massive increase in tv revenue and player sales from Lukaku and Stones and others to spend, we'd be in a far far better position than we're in now.

Possibly - but that's all theoretical. We have to deal with the here and now. There's no point wondering what if, when we have a major club crisis right now.

With hind sight yeah but at the time...??

Its all relative, Just shows how right you are, how poor we are.

Brands has already said he needs more than 12months to turn the club around, I suppose it suits him to appoint a young hungry manager like Silva, see how it goes for 18months and then take it from there.

Brands will not be sharing the impatience of the fanbase, hes got a plan and he knows we arent a quick fix, so I suppose from his POV the manager doesnt really factor at this point.

@MarcelsGoat hmmmm
