5th would be phenomenal given our home form up to present.
6th would be almost as incredible.
7th would be acceptable.
As for next season, depending upon how the new investment impacts upon the squad in terms of the only 'outs' being aging/injury prone/journeymen and one or two exciting additions, anything lower than 6th would likely be viewed as disappointing.

5th is still possible. Manu will drop plenty of points. It won't happen unless we can get some wins at home though.

Dont you know anything about Everton Man?

Ok who's next.

6/7 would be ideal.
Maybe higher if teams drop points.
Needs to be the aim, and is achievable with a good run into the end of the season.

Let's aim for the highest possible finish.

This.

But we can't get too ahead of ourselves as fans either way. These long-term target things just result in expectations on here and suddenly as soon as we don't meet one fan's 'perceived expectations' it's the end of the world (e.g. after the WBA game).

Game by game.

Our only target now is the three points against W.Ham. I can guarantee that's how the team will be working.

8th would be a result given the season so far.

still far from good enough with this squad though.

Beginning of the season, had somebody told you that we'd finish top eight (not saying we will like but basing it on your post), we'd get to the semi-final of the lg cup, get to (at least) the last eight of the FA Cup (who knows what will happen with that), be taken over, play some of the best attacking footy we have seen since the 80s, had Barkley getting double figures and Lukaku breaking two goalscoring records, would you say that it had been a bad season?

No, you wouldn't have.

It has been a frustrating season due to the fact of the under performance of the usual big-guns, and teams like Leicester and Spurs being able to take advantage of that. Unfortunately we haven't, but at this stage with 11 games to go we're still in with a shout of getting a European spot. That's how tight it is.

top 4 is seemingly out of the question

we are 6 points of 5th, but utd are hitting a bit of form now..

6th guarantees europe and seems a distinct possibility, that should be our aim imo

thoughts?

From where we are, 5 points behind West Ham with 11 ( ? ) games to go, 6th is possible, but really relies on us having a storming end to the season and West Ham, Soton, Chelsea, Stoke and our neighbours being rank average.

I'd say sixth is a bit hopeful, good to aim for, but we're more likely to finish 7th or 8th than 6th, which would be a reasonable outcome to the season.

As we play West Ham, Southampton and United who all sit 2,5,6 ahead of us in the table then really its in our own hands to finish top 5-7th, similarly we play Liverpool adn Watford who are both just beneath us as well, so really if we don't finish AT LEAST 6th then we have ourselves to blame really

With 11 games to go we're always going to be playing some teams around us, but yea, you're right, it's in our hands.

Fans of Utd, West Ham, Soton etc will all be saying the same though.

Totally and that's the way it should be, but IF this team is as good as many of us think and this manager is as good as some of our fans think then that should be the target mate, none of this settling for 8-10th as long as we are above the rs guff that we are soemtimes guilty of

This team is better than Uniteds, Saints or West Hams, in fact its better than all but 4 teams in the league IMO, 2-4th and Chelseas, it's time they started to play and prodcue results that showed that, We have a feel good factor with the new owners and a lot of the Anti martinez crowd will be willing to give him a chance to turn this around, its up to him now to grab his cojones and stop talking and do it.

If we beat Cheslea in the cup - whcih really we should be doing, then potentially the only better team than us left in it will be Arsenal (if they navigate the replay and next round as well), 5-7th and the cup should be the goal now and anything less is a failiure really

Win a few lose a few (no tankings)don't care too much just please beat the r/s and win the fa cup . Mid table mediocrity is a nail on then see what the summer brings .
