Foden

Sterling is a bit off the pace at the moment and his place could be in jeopardy in the starting XI for me.

looks like the Foden situation with regards to his development has been handled very well, they’ve got a real gem on their hands.
Spot on mate. Sterling blows hot and cold for me. Foden though, what a player. I wonder if he'd have developed like he has if he'd have been with anyone else.

You look at the attacking options available to England, with Foden, Mount, Sterling, Kane, and Sancho, it really is very exciting, especially as you've got some good players not included in that. I suppose the question is, will we ever see them all in the same team together?

southgate is still in charge though

Just watching some highlights of this lad and think he deserves his own thread. The Stockport Iniesta nickname is well deserved. I actually think he is ahead of Iniesta in his development at the same age. His playmaking skills are not as fine yet but he is already a better finisher then Iniesta was. He is set-up for a huge end of the season with City still in the CL and surely Southgate is going to start him at the Euro’s. A future Ballon dor winner I think. Talk about landing on his feet having Pep arrive at the club when he did to oversee his development.
And people laughed when Pep said Foden was the best player he's ever worked with....

Just shows that you don't have to chuck a young player in every game for them to develop in the right way. There were massive calls for him to start every game but it was obvious what Guardiola was doing 'learn from Silva, be patient and you will be his direct replacement'

Guardiola figures prominently here because despite arriving with a history of giving young players a chance to develop quickly, he was criticized regularly for how he was bringing Phil along. Always easier to have the benefit of hindsight but even proven success didn't preclude Pep from being scrutinized on his work at City

Very similar in many ways to David Silva which also explains why his development took a bit longer. I still think Foden has to demonstrate the mentality of a David Silva to eventually live up to a comparison with him

David emerged on the scene at Valencia at 20 y.o. and he was a beast, week after week

I'd be more concerned that they'll be let down by average defenders. Foden is quality might actually enjoy watching England again soon.
This is very true. England have been looking good going forward in the last few years, but not very good at the back. Stones and Maquire are okish in the middle of the back four but after that nobody stands out. Full backs are ok and dont have a great keeper. Pickford would still be my first choice..
