Football Book Recommendations

The Bottom Corner by Nige Tassell - A good read based around a year in non-league

Gunshots & Goalposts by Benjamin Roberts - History of Northern Irish football. Interesting, grim, funny and tragic.

As for Everton based I enjoyed Southall's (Binman Chronicles) and Peter Reid's (I think it's called Cheer up Peter Reid?). I'd swerve In Search Of Duncan Ferguson as it's completely handicapped by having no access whatsoever to Ferguson himself. Also Ian Snodin's is pretty poor unfortunately.

'A breath of Fred Ayre'

The book's not that good from what I remember, but it's a great title. lol
His book ,kicked into touch
is actually a decent read.
Have read loads of football books over the years.
Lots of the Everton ones are OK if your a blue , but can't say any stand out.
rathbones book I really liked,
Didn't mind the Colin Harvey one either.
Gazza book is crap nearly unreadable that bad
fowler the same, did you know he was from Toxteth on every other page.
most of them to be honest
Jackie Chalton book was decent.
Fat Sam, boring and everything is about money.
Franny Lee book was a decent read.
Read loods of the hooligan books as well.
Mostly lies and crap with the odd one being a half decent read.
Very few to be honest.

Would also recommend Paul McGrath's autobiography (harrowing at times), Mark Ward's 'From Right Wing to B Wing' and another Clough bio, 'Providing You Don't Kiss Me' by Duncan Hamilton.

Avoid Graeme Sharp's awful autobiography, Sharpy, like the plague. He comes across as a moaning arlarse, like a Scottish Alan Partridge.
I read Mark Ward's book a few years ago, was decent.

I got given Leon Osman's book a few years ago as a xmas present, still haven’t bothered with it.

Read a few of the hooligan books a while back, thought they were all fabricated stories as well. Just treated them as fiction basically so quite enjoyed them lol

Same rubbish in most of them , we were the top mob in the country.
Very rarely get done, mostly batter mobs while outnumbered ect.
The brick , Middlesbrough one is OK. He openly admitted he didn't even like football.
Naughty forty , Stoke is a good read.
Man city , Mikey Francis one is OK
Anything from any London club, just seems to be a load of bollocks.
Some of the man unt, ones as bad.
Villa , load of bollocks , fella says he was a boxer , they were the top mob in the country ?
I actually have seen him sparked out , after asking for a one on one, basically any one of you, bang on his arse .
He got beaten up year later both at his own ground.
Men in black isn't a bad read.
Have read loads of them, like a few of the lower league ones as you have know idea what was going on around the country with a lot of them.
Thought scally was actually was one of the best out of them.
Anybody that was around knows , if you went around fighting you would come a cropper at some stage, didn't matter what team you were or what you thought you were.
Any of the big clubs could turn out numbers that would , have anybody on there toes or staying in the escort for your own protection.
Then you have the hometown loons from around the country, even numbers a lot of them are a match for anybody.
Coppers were the number one mob , got more hiding off them than anyone else.

Paul Lake's book is very good, treated very badly by Swales regarding his career ending knee injury. Howard Kendall comes across very well.

I liked Inverting the Pyramid. Anatomy of England is another good one from Wilson if you follow/support the England team.

Tor! by Uli Hesse is a good one on the history of German football

I've also got Football Against the Enemy, Football in Sun and Shadow, The Ball is Round, Zonal Marking all on my bookshelf waiting to be read but haven't got round to it yet.

I enjoyed Gazas book, got me through a plane journey with some funny stories.

Guvnors is the Man City one; you're right it's not bad, quite funny too.

Paul Lake of Man City did a good autobiography. Talks well of Peter Reid
It was shocking the way Swales treated him. Sent him to America for treatment and he was told not to bend his knee. They sent him back home in economy class whilst the club execs were stretched out in first class. Undid all the work the surgeon had just done.

it’s always amusing reading to one of these books describing an incident the other firm has already had their say on. . Usually goes something like” in their book they say they came and did our main lads but really they only battered a few scarfers, the main lads were waiting for them and they never even tried to get to us”

Haha, nearly everyone of them has that in it.
