It's only six games into the new season but Everton have tightened up quite significantly. Two goals conceded in their first six games against Man Utd and Brentford holding the best defensive record in the league statistically. James Tarkowski left the club for Lyon but the incoming Chrislain Matsima is playing well above expectation and has put in a solid performance every game so far. He has really made a difference to Everton's stability. Forward players have felt their frustration coming up against Matsima. Hojlund mentioned after their recent game with Everton that Matsima kept him out of the game and allowed him no space. Matsima won all 7 of his aerial duels that day too. Jurgen Klopp also paid respect to Matsima and Branthwaite when the recent derby finished 0-0. Salah and Gakpo were frozen out of the game and again both defenders were key in tackling and in the air too. They also finished the match with an impressive 95% rate of pass completion. Patterson and Mykolenko are off to a great start too with Mykolenko named man of the match on two occasions. Everton as a defensive unit have been in sync and the understanding on the pitch with the midfield duo of Onana and Samardzic in front of them. Igor Zubeldia and Ben Godfrey are both frustrated about lack of playing time but they cannot replace the effectiveness of Branthwaite and Matsima. It's key for Everton to keep them both fit and injury free throughout the season. Godfrey and Zubelida have shown they can step in when needed, keeping Everton in the League Cup this season with good performances against Barnsley and Bournemouth. Jordan Pickford has kept Everton in games with displays of maturity, keeping his head under pressure and pulling off some magnificent saves. His form so far this season being recognised all across Europe as one of the best Goalkeepers and firmly in the spot of England's number one.
