Hasan was fervently opposed to War on Terror

The Texas army camp massacre gunman was being investigated for possible links to an extremist website, it has emerged.

Hasan had come to the attention of law enforcement officials at least six months ago because of internet postings that compared suicide bombers to soldiers who throw themselves on a grenade to save their comrades' lives.

Investigators were not certain whether Hasan had written the posts and a formal investigation had not been opened before the shooting, law enforcement sources said.

But authorities have not ruled out that Hasan was acting on behalf of some unidentified radical group. Nor are they ruling out the possibility that some of the casualties were shot accidentally by military officials who responded at the scene.

The thing that frightens me is the inevitable repercussion against Muslims. Our track record on tolerance towards non-whites and non-Christians isn't stellar. Hope this gets treated for what it is and that's it.

Come on, i'm being cynical. The way Bush and his cronies chatted to the media about we got em, and there bloodthirsty desire to bomb any country from the middle east. It just surprises me that a man of such name got that far in the military. How is that racist? I'm not the racist one.

Secondly (for this post), of course they wish they had never given him a gun, but NOTHING about him would suggest they shouldn't have. Hindsight is wonderful for the casual internet observer to comment on.

Historically, that is true, just like it is true of the British Armed Forces. But with our incredibly diverse culture we have over here now, it is not true, one iota.

Him being a Muslim major is not a problem as such. The American Army has people of all and no faith. But (hold your breath) if your a muslim major, and if there is suspicion (I'm taking Goats word on the post) that you have been engaged in naughty postings, and if you've made it known that you do not wish to be posted to Afghanistan, surely the only route for you would be;

(a) Court marshall ~ your going to jail boy
(b) Some warning upon proven allegation of your future conduct
(c) Get rid through an honourable discharge

Unless I have more information, nobody can be blamed that he decided to shoot people, its not exactly the normal course of discourse if you disagree with something is it?

If there were known rumblings, seems strange that quiet attempts to move him on weren't made ages ago, but then I am not fully aware of the context, and in all discussion, context is important.

Anyway, hope I have not strayed too far from the subject manner and the rules of the forum.

Refuse to deploy and you don't get out with an honorable discharge.....best you can hope for is 'Other Than Honorable - Administrative'. Which is terrible if you want to get a decent job afterwards.

Just been reading on the Reuters site that Fort Hood has had 75 suicides since the Iraq invasion...over 12 on average each year, way above the ratio on other bases. Then this happens. Obviously there's something very wrong there.

Maybe. It is one of the largest US Army posts and the only two-division post in the US. Home to the First Cavalry Division (roughly 16,700 troops) and the First Army Division West (essentially training and support). Don't know how much of the First Cav is/has been deployed in the Middle East but given it is a main combat unit, have to think most of the division has been over there at some point.

I said I was surprised that a man with such an islamic name was allowed to rise to Major because of the war in Iraq and Afganistan. It's no great secret that the people in those regions have a distaste for the Western world and I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

I was actually more interested in a balanced debate on how far the US military have come to allow a man with that kind of name into the army. I mean all the hoo har about gays in the military, women and black men.

So rather than people being defensive, why not discuss without getting angry.

But it's probably going to happen if you feel that someone is mocking your nation, but that's not the case.

Sharpy................should someone called Milligan, O'Riley, O'Donnel be banned from our forces because they have Irish names, many Americans, especially young black Americans chose to follow Islam, why should their religious beliefs effect progression in the forces, now that is simple mate, understand their society rather than pan it for panning sake!
