Fort Hood shootings

Sharpy................should someone called Milligan, O'Riley, O'Donnel be banned from our forces because they have Irish names, many Americans, especially young black Americans chose to follow Islam, why should their religious beliefs effect progression in the forces, now that is simple mate, understand their society rather than pan it for panning sake!

It shouldn't religion, race, colour or creed shouldn't stop you from doing anythig...

But still, i think it's suprising he was able to get so far in the American army.

Look im certinly not in the know. But it did suprise me.

Maybe. It is one of the largest US Army posts and the only two-division post in the US. Home to the First Cavalry Division (roughly 16,700 troops) and the First Army Division West (essentially training and support). Don't know how much of the First Cav is/has been deployed in the Middle East but given it is a main combat unit, have to think most of the division has been over there at some point.

It's a hell of a rate. The US suicide rate is 11 per 100,000. If you used the same ratio in Fort Hood it'd be 30 per 100,000. Granted, they face massive pressures, but that looks strange.

Based on that some great basketball and baseball players would never be picked mate, try looking at it if you were a black guy living in the states, it should not and was not a handicap to the guy and that is credit to US society in my book. If some proves he was a terrorist then that would surprise me, the last thing a terrorists would do is draw attention to himself and a name is a dead give away mate:)

Why are people surprised. Michael Xavier Portillo, of immigrant stock (and not the only one) rose to prominece in the UK. A certain Colin Powell, born in the Caribbean rose to promience in the Army.

I doubt he got there baed on affirmative action. I don't understand army hierachy, so I am not sure how a psychiatrist (Army medical corps) gets to be a major.

Despite some of our own cynicism, American's can actual do the "judge a man by the content of his character" rather than the colour of his skin. Besides you've made the awesome assumption that muslim means anti American.

Thank god there are some sensible people in America:P

In the military here in the United States, people are promoted on MERIT, not on RACE or ETHNICITY.

If someone was passed over because of their skin color or name, then that would be DISCRIMINATION.

Are we clear on this? Frankly those of you who are saying the man shouldn't have risen so far because of his name and religion disgust me, and you really should be ashamed of yourselves and really highlights the ignorance on display here. The USA is one of the most culturally diverse nations in the world, if not the most diverse.

As for the high suicide rate, ever heard of Post-Traumatic Stess Disorder (PTSD)???? Try looking at the suicide stats for people who suffer from PTSD before attributing it to a problem at the base. I am sure the Tommy's have just as many cases of PTSD after serving in Iraq/Afgan.

And BT, a Major isn't all that high of a rank. From the bottom

2nd Lieutenant
1st Lieutenant
Captain
Major
Lt Colonel
Colonel
Then the 4 levels of General

For a doctor to get to Major is just the minimum they should expect after they serve their first obligation.

This Dylan, this is not what I am saying. I am saying that it surprised me that he did, not that he shouldn't.

There's a difference there.

Have you noticed that the Islamic people on the list are EXTREMISTS???

Oh, yeah, the British tanks that got shot. Right, the British tanks operating behind Enemy lines, with no allied markings (on an unannounced op), with reconfigured tank domes operating near strike windows.........

Historically, that is true, just like it is true of the British Armed Forces. But with our incredibly diverse culture we have over here now, it is not true, one iota.

Refuse to deploy and you don't get out with an honorable discharge.....best you can hope for is 'Other Than Honorable - Administrative'. Which is terrible if you want to get a decent job afterwards.

dunno if this is the same one think it is and i heard a differant story!

I did myself Foz but no one will know the truth as our MoD is as bad as the Pentagon mate

yeah found this!

did have it in the original post but cut it for 2 mins!

BBC NEWS | UK | 'Friendly fire' probes differ widely

That confusion over what the military calls "situational awareness" need not have been fatal as the British armoured vehicles were identified with orange panels, showing friendly forces.

But then, tragically, the pilots mistook those orange panels for "orange rocket launchers" - and went in for the kill.

Oh is that what they told you was it....

The British armoured vehicle was clearly marked with agreed allied markings, orange side panels and the lambda sign on the roof. They were operating in a designated area that was known to the allied air controllers.

The pilots had plenty of experience flying in simulators and over the desert of Nevada but had no combat experience

They acted like total and utter cowboys...shooting the crap out of anything that moved...So you just jog on, and suck up the crap that the US military fed you.

Iv read right throught tis thread again, and not one person has said what your implieing.

So WTF are you going on about.

Myself an Ghost said we were 'SUPRISED' / Not thats he should'nt have....

What part of that dont you understand..?????

Why do you get so annoyed when anyone speaks in bad terms about America, its a forum of opinions. Not every one loves America like you!!!

Well it makes a welcome change, from the yanks shooting our lot

Okay...I'll back up this statement with some facts for you...

US troops get training to avoid friendly-fire attacks on British - Times Online

2005 - 32 blue-on-blue attacks by american forces on allied coalition vehicles in 12 months

Blue on blue deaths raise tough questions for MoD | World news | The Guardian

2007 - 3 british soldiers killed by blue-on-blue attack by US F15

I could go on...but I think my point is made....and as for threatening to ban ghost....you're well out of order
He wasn't being rascist, but merely stating well known facts...the US military maybe one of the most culturally, and ethnically diverse of any major world military force, but it's also the most racially dis-jointed and seperated world military organisations..

I served alongside US military units in Berlin, Naples, and in Saudi and eventually Iraq, and I witnessed complete racial seperation of ethnic groups within the US military units, the hispanics stuck together and didn't mix as did the blacks, and the whites...so get off your "American" High-Horse. There's no place for it on a forum like this

And don't go threatening people either
