Forum Crash

There's little we can do to prevent it and quite simply, we couldn't afford to regularly sustain that kind of 'spike' traffic. It was completely unprecedented - not helped by other Everton forums being inaccessible.

After prodding the server and seeing what software its running on the server side of things I can pretty much guarantee that I could keep the forum up and running during the load spikes AND beat the price you currently pay for the hosting. Based on techniques learned when running some really really big websites a few years back. I already employ the same techniques for another premier league fan forum site and they havnt been down since I took over the hosting.

Already offered to mirror the site

A static mirror of a dynamic website isnt a great deal of help. Without new content a social place dies.

Actually nope :-P I bill all web hosting monthly in arrears. I do 28 days satisfaction guarantee, if you're not totally happy with the hosting at the end of 28 days you request a copy of the database from me, I close the forum temporarilly and dump the database. You import the database at the old host and re open the forum there and I never raise the first invoice.

Could someone page a person in the know over to this thread please? I have a funny feeling I know what the answer will be (probably hello ban hammer) however from looking at the publically available information the forum provides about the setup it seems the current provider; which appears to provide managed hosting hasnt configured the server to handle load in remotely the best way possible. Probably wants to push more expensive/bigger hosting packages in lieu of a smart set up. A shame really.

In case anyone is interested I looked at the http headers and saw a certain bit of software mentioned. I am presuming that its setup in a fairly default way since the website totally died under heavy load last night. Then I looked at the reverse host names of machines/switches on the hops before I reach this website and did some poking around those websites. Deduced some information and decided to post after noting last night that this place didnt survive the transfer window closing.
