What is the point?

Seriously? Have forums had their day?

The idea was good initially, but us as human beings can't get along without sniping at each other, for whatever reason.

If the Blues are doing **** then he's crap and that's crap, and your crap, and you don't know what your talking about and bans are handed out left right and centre.

When the Blues are doing well, there is still the Tony Marsh-esque complaints about that player and this player. Behaviour is generally out of order by some (including me), and steps backwards are required, and a thought to how you would behave if this wasn't a cyber world. Well I know that I wouldn't argue as much offline.

So why is it done? Why do I do it, why do you do it, why do we all do it?

Frustration that we are inside on a computer and not out enjoying real life? Maybe.

For me I use this site/forum as a way to hand out opinions on certain aspects of the club. If nobody agrees, I don't care that much, it's an opinion. What I do care about is how I am perceived by some. My life may have become pathetic, I agree - short of being a skanky drug addict from the Ferry, I didn't really like myself too much.

A big decision has been made, and it's onwards and upwards. But as for forums, well they have been a substitute for the real thing, which I am hoping will thrive next season, now that I am returning back to the hallowed ground.

Anybody else got any thoughts on why they use a forum, and why we behave the way we do?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sockpuppet_(Internet)

I found chico.

A sockpuppet is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an online community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of an Internet community speaks with or about himself or herself, pretending to be a different person,[1] like a ventriloquist manipulating a hand puppet.

In current usage, the perception of the term has been extended beyond second identities of people who already post in a forum to include other uses of misleading online identities. For example, a NY Times article claims that "sock-puppeting" is defined as "the act of creating a fake online identity to praise, defend or create the illusion of support for one’s self, allies or company."[2]

Forums are fairly straight forward.

what is a forum - Google Search

Well a forum can trace it's roots back to Roman times, and probably earlier. An Internet forum is a place where people can be someone, and someone they are less likely to be in real life.

This isn't a dig at this forum, this is generally what forum's are like in whatever guise.

Or maybe it's online social behaviour in general. Ever been on YouTube and watched a clip of anything? It's usually followed by people arguing about this and that in the comments section.

Sometimes I would like to disconnect and go back to basics.

But surely we use this forum because we all share an interest in Everton and wish to discuss things with other Everton fans from around the world.

Surely thats all it is? Everybody uses computers these days, but the cyber world still has all these stigmas attached to it. Contray to popular belief, we are not all 14 year spotty virgins who wear glasses.

Yes but people argue in real life as well, the only difference is that on the internet only peoples feeling get hurt.

Its true we all hide behind our computers, clearly we all hide behind our internet persona, im very shy in real life, clearly im not on the internet, but im sure once you got to know me, you would realise that most of my internet persona is how I am.

Don't understand. Go back to basics?

Your same argument could be applied to the written word.

And this bit "Frustration that we are inside on a computer and not out enjoying real life? Maybe."

Well by going back to basics I mean - turning off the computer, switching off the tv and stepping outside and enjoying the summer's night. But I bet hardly anybody will do that tonight, regardless of what's on telly.

I'm the same person on here as in real everyday life, and i'm happy about that.Sometimes i don't like to talk to people, that reflects in my post count, if i've got nothing to say then i say nothing. If someone pisses me off i just verbally call them a tit and move on,as in real life.

Well, without sounding blunt. Do it then.

While we are the subject of questioning the point of forums, lets remember Vijay.

Hello all Everton fans,

My father died very suddenly just before twelve today on this very forum from what appears to be a massive heart attack.

My name is Deepak, the youngest son of Vijay. As some of you may be aware my dad was a very ill man indeed. He went to his first Everton match in the early fifties after arriving from India to Liverpool. He went to every game home and away until 2002. He loved Everton football club and was devastated when he had to give up his season ticket due to his amputations and ill health. We tried for years to get him online and he would not. Only when we told him of these types of forums he would agree to one.

I would like to thank all who interacted with him. You made his last few months enjoyable because he was always talking of the grand old team website.

He leaves a wife, four sons and a daughter. Plus many grandchildren from seven to fifteen who absolutely adored him.

I wish all of you and your club the very best in the future.

Thank you, Deepak.

Go out then mate, after you have dodged the dog**** and the smack heads asking for 20p for the bus, then maybe you can come home and sit in front of the tele and watch Eastenders.

Or maybe go the pub and spend money that you might not have.

I took the kids the park after school, now they are having baths, then they will be going to bed, sometimes its hard for some people to go out.

... and as long as people such as yourself make use of this forum, i'll make sure it's always here - even if I'm out of pocket a few quid every month and it takes a fair amount of time to maintain.

As Ghost pointed out, forums have stood the test of time and theres a reason for that.

To be honest, this forum is like a drug to me. Log in at GOT as soon as I'm home from work and at every spare minute I find. As one of the very few Everton fans in Holland, I love being able to discuss all Everton related issues with my fellow chosen ones.

Wouldn't want to miss it, so it still has a purpose to me. Most important rule for me is to not get worked up too much. It's all about opinions and it's not worth it to sit screaming at your pc/laptop screen. Think Vim puts it down perfectly.(y)

Anyway, one to go before hitting the 2000 posts mark.:D
