2021/22 Frank Lampard

It's very very very odd how none of our managers seem to want to show too much dexterity tactically speaking. It's either ultra boring KITAP stuff, or gung ho front foot style (sort of).

Lampard can probably get away with the front foot style at home, but away we clearly can't.

Of course they'd be moans if he did play for 0-0s away, but it'd be sensible in out current plight.

I'm not happy with a lot of his decisions and tactics but it'd take some manager to get joy out of Holgate, Keane and Godfrey as your centre backs.

Each and every one of them have been an absolute disgrace. Godfrey may have potential but he's regressed massively in every regard this season despite still being rough around the edges last season too.

The decision to reward Michael Keane a new contract in 2020, after a spell of good form playing in a low block, instead of cashing in and bringing in a quality centre back in his place is in the top 3 worst decisions we've made in the Moshiri era. And there have been many horrific decisions.

But he a nice player to have around in the place

Because they're wingers mate

Eat your humble pie Frank and either play the kids and work with the first team for several weeks for the game that actually matters, or drop the shoehorning into a formation that you like even though you don't have the players for it
Well not really... Townsend is a winger but the 343 was working with the press. He has more discipline than Gray so was staying to that side so there was an overload, meaning Gordon could float around.

Gray and Gordon cannot play in the same side. They're both too similar.

The players can’t grasp one tactical set up, imagine trying to get them to master two and change within mid game.

Don’t want to get at Lampard because this squad is terrible. That said he has a RB and LB on the bench. We end up with Iwobi and Gordon as wing backs. He persists with Kenny LB when he’s not good enough and also is a RB. We need to just start playing players in there positions at least for some balance.

I dont even think he went gung ho. We started brightly.
But every single Evertonian on the planet knew if we didnt score and they did first that was it. They'd collapse. Have you ever seen a more fragile gutless bunch ever.

He seems to me to set us up to play like a team with good players: defenders who are comfortable in possession, and midfielders who can receive the ball under pressure and use it constructively, or at least find a blue shirt 10 yards away. We have very few of those.
Totally agree

I think his preferred formation is probably (hopefully?!) 4-3-3 but he would have struggled to send a team out to play that today. Doucoure-Gomes and who? No Allan, VDB, Davies, Delph or even Onyango who could play in that role. He’s therefore tried to play a formation with the half wits he has available which hasn’t worked.
3 at the back has been a disaster every time we’ve tried it. He needs to bin it now regardless of who is unavailable and stick to the same system. I’d be tempted to try Godfrey in there- his lack of height would be less exposed and he has pace and mobility the rest of the midfield lacks. Or Holgate in a midfield 3 with Branthwaite at the back.

Gung-ho is a bit strong, but certainly more open than under much of Ancelotti or Benitez's time here.

That's certainly true about heads dropping. Probably the most disappointing part of today actually. Looking ahead it would have been a good sign to see any form of fight in adversity. Imagine going 1-0 down on the final day needing a point to stay up.

Terrifying.
