Less chances created tends to equal less goals. Our goals against column is a little misleading too, we’ve conceded some of the most chances of any team in the league this season. That luck will turn at some point and we need to do better going forward.
If the chances conceded are relatively low quality and the goalkeeper is good, does that matter? Another way of looking at the same string of data is that we're among the sides most likely to continue to produce results at the back (all else equal, eg: injury), because we have a larger sample size of our ability to deny goals from chances.

I don't think anyone would argue with the proposition that we are a poor attacking side that will have to get its goals from having a relatively high conversion rate on the limited chances created. It's why I've been hammering on the 'set piece' drum so hard.

That’s a big concern for me. We’ve won games without playing overly well, we need to start doing better in possession to have a decent season

Cheers for posting that. Think if you also add stats for XG for, big chances created etc. we’re down the bottom for those as well.

It’s not surprising, we struggled there last season too and we’ve lost Richarlison from last years line up. Creating chances and scoring goals was always going to be difficult this season.

We’re more solid and difficult to break down this season, next summer window sure Frank will address the lack of creativity/goals.

Main areas to upgrade to improve going forward: wide forwards, left back and a creative/attacking central midfielder.

Yeah set pieces could be important for us this season. When we had DCL, Onana, Tarks and Coady on the pitch was thinking there’s some proper threat there now. Get good delivery and those guys can attack the ball and score goals. Just need to find that good delivery…

Garner. The problem is finding a way to get him on the pitch.

Agree on set pieces. Should be an area of strength for us especially if we can get DCL fit to add to Onana, Tarks and Coady. Without Paterson I would be tempted to revert to a 3 at the back for the next couple of fixtures. Iwobi sadly to right wing back but then Garner can come into a 3 man midfield. DCL up top with Maupay if up to it. Both Gordon and Gray are struggling and will provide good second half options from the bench

Yeah, what I mean is that we made a lot more than 2 silly mistakes so just focusing on the ones that got punished doesn't really tell the whole story. I think we've made silly mistakes quite consistently to be honest, but what we've been infinitely better at this year is covering for them. Player A messes up but player B comes to the rescue etc. Last night that 'luck' (it's not luck but you know what I mean) ran out and we got punished in a way we haven't in other games. The improvement in resilience to cover those mistakes and to keep going in a game like last night shouldn't be underestimated though, it's a big step forward if they can keep it up.

There could be a lot of confirmation bias in this for me, but 1st half I think we managed the game really badly. I almost think we got caught between 2 stools of trying to attack/go for the kill and defend on the lead we had, and did neither effectively.

It was funny, as the mood seemed to be we would steamroller United. Theyve won 5 of their last 6 and while that defeat was heavy there is some mitigation with it being away at City. They also added Casemiro who is a class act. I think we got ahead of ourselves in thinking we could just run over a side who while they have weaknesses are clearly a top 6 team with world class talent.

Hindsight is 20/20 and I am very cautious, but honestly think the player yesterday after getting a bit of a gift goal was to remove the counter, which is their biggest threat. To be more patient, sit in and keep compact. As the game wears on there is a chance to transition ourselves.

We didnt play well, but in a lot of games this season we havent played well, but we have managed games better. We have been happy to hang in for a point. We didnt do that on Sunday which is disappointing as had we, I think we may have got a point.

But it could just be, we were more unlucky/punished more by a side who are very clinical on the counter.

My cousin pointed out that as well as switching the sides of the "wingers", we also switched the roles of the fullbacks with the wingers at times.

Hence Myko given more freedom to push on.
The first half we just dropped the ball there and as a result we were absolutely no threat. Glad we made the adjustment and hopefully we catch it sooner next time if it becomes a problem.

Our attacking issues are there for all to see, if we can work them out, either by tweaks or simply buying new players, we should be ok.

Hopefully Dom being back is the springboard the team needs.

If DCL is back in the team then we should be looking at putting our wingers on their natural side ie McNeil left and Gray/Gordon right, if not then we need the FBs bombing on which we don't have.

I said it before the match, in the match thread, Utd. are a much better team this season and, the City game apart, have had some great results, I said I would have taken a point, if offered, before the game started. It amazes me how the opinion of some posters on here swings so dramatically on the back of varying results, we beat West Ham and Southampton, it's top 7 for sure, we lose to Utd. it's a relegation fight.

We are a steadily improving team which will do well to finish the season in 12th place or above. I appreciate that that is not where we want to be, but, it is where we are. Leave Lampard and his team alone to carry on their work and we can expect more improvement next season, with a possible push for Europe. For God sake let's stop with the knee jerk reactions to every result, good or bad. We are firmly lower mid table level, we will win some, we will lose some.
It's maybe already been said, but this is far too sensible a comment! What on earth were you thinking? Ha.

This is it. If we are improving like we think we are, then we will go there and compete. If we perform, we have a chance of points in both games. Even last night we were in the game until the end. It's possible we get nothing from those games, of course, and that will be a cause for concern, but most of us are prepared to be patient if the overall trend is positive. I don't go in for the "Super" Frank nonsense - he has loads to learn - and it's possible, even likely, that he will eventually be found out (almost every Everton manager is found out in the end), but he'll get plenty of time from me, regardless of my doubts.

You can't judge a guy on two or three games, which is why if he has us out of the relegation zone by the World Cup break, then that'll do me for now. I'd like us to be comfortable, but it's a big enough job to get us mid-table this season. We have competed in every game so far this season. Providing we can avoid our form falling off a cliff, the signs are reasonably positive that we'll be respectable. I'm disappointed with the United performance and result, but it is what it is. A few wins didn't call for hanging out the bunting either, mind, so our slow climb to respectability continues.
Another FAR too sensible post. Haha

His in game management needs to improve but I wouldn't read too much into the game on Sunday. Everyone individually had a really [Poor language removed] game. Both the goals they scored were due to poor individual mistakes.

We’ll have played 5 of last season’s top 7 in our first 10 games and should’ve had Arsenal in there too. It opens up for us a bit after that Newcastle game so those few weeks on the run in to the World Cup are crucial to determining whereabouts we’ll be come the end of the season. 40 points is still the target and I’m seeing particularly Spurs away as a free hit. Newcastle is an opportunity for points but they look PED’d up to the max this season.
