Crying out for a midfielder who's good on the ball. Nobody with the composure to pick it up and dictate play a little, something we've badly lacked the previous couple of seasons.

Think it's the set up. In a 3 we're solid enough. There's just not link up with the front 3.

If you look at the RS the past couple of seasons, their midfield is based purely on athleticism, win the ball, feed the front 3.

We do that...falls to bits with our hot and cold front 3 that barely score or create.

If you look at United they had a holding 2, with 1 dictating player, and a creative 10 in a 4231 formation.

Lampard has largely been overly defensive during his time at Everton, perhaps that’s not surprising given how poor we were in defence last season.

But just like he eventually binned off the back 5 to great effect, I think he will soon bin off having two defensive midfielders playing alongside each other in the form of Gueye and Onana, and we might stop sitting back so much.

I think we will soon enough play with one overly defensive midfielder like Gueye or Onana, who will line up next to Iwobi and then we will get a more attacking midfielder like Kudus or Kamada In Germany.

Unfortunately, it doesn't matter if we had De Bruyne. The players are stood still, watching the man on the ball. They should be moving into space and offering options, instead, they literally ball watch. It's criminal.

Onana is not a defensive midfielder, well he certainly isn’t playing as one anyway

That's just a way of shutting down criticism of a manager.

Go through this thread and see how many times I compliment Lampard.

You need to be more objective. If a manager has lost us the points then that should be pointed out.
2 mistakes by arguably our best players lost the points.
Not the manager , nor anyone else for that matter.

The only way Lampard could have influenced that would be to not have selected them in the first place.

In some respects a good match to have.
united were a class above in possession and they would have battered a lesser defense.
it was good test that exposed the current progress of the team.
think Garner will make a difference

He could have made changes much, much sooner.

He could but at the same time, those players have shown in the last few games that they have the ability to implement his game plan so I think he owed them a chance to turn it around.

As for the DCL change, Frank said that he had 20ish minutes in him so there isn’t too much he could have done with that one.

We were never going to go from the situation last season to having a season of performances where we have no off days so I can move past yesterday and just hope we put a better showing in next week even if we still come away with nothing against a tough team.

Based on what I’ve seen from Tarks, he and Coady will probably be reminding the lads of the minimum expectations during the week.

Before the game Ian darke on the commentary said that Frank had the team really g'd up for the game and I think this could be a bit of an own goal from him. As many of the players seemed overly keen and as a result there were a lot of mistakes made. Gordon had a shocker which isn't a surprise considering his other home performances this season. The central midfield couldn't knock two passes together either.

It may have suited to just let them have the ball and play on the counter. Both their goals came from being wasteful in possession and another good chance of theirs came again from gueye losing the ball.

I think Frank may learn from this because if he has got them overly worked up for the game it was perhaps not necessary and would have been better to take a more professional pragmatic approach to the game. But this is all speculation of course based on what one commentator said.

The manager was entirely to blame for reacting so late to what was blindingly obvious, his choice of Gordon, Onana and Gana all playing so badly in the first half that two should have been hauled off at halftime or even earlier.
