2022/23 Frank Lampard

We had managed it under Ancelotti.

Benitez then inexplicably ripped it up. That was his biggest mistake. I genuinely thought he would just continue with that. Carlo did very well here.
We finished 12th mate, and the second half of the season was well worse than that.

The first half was largely buoyed by not being defensive for a stretch where we won basically every match. It really didn't work. It won't work now. We have to develop better attacking play and crucially we have to start playing in the opponent's half way way more.

The default setting is realistic. When the realistic outlook calls for sun there will be sun.

We had a chance to make it that Saturday and guess what happened? Frank's team went out after halftime of a tight game and barely got a sniff. So gloom for another couple of weeks until we once again try to play away from home like a real team.
Gonna regret this, but, what would you have done differently, Pep?

And please dont say "Attack more".

I am not capable of doing this, but I'd have coached a team that can press and pin teams back more effectively. That way we don't get into periods of play like that second half where they can press and harass us into clearances but when we get opportunities to do the same we are unable to.

That's honestly the biggest problem. That half happened because of long term issues and not a poor formation or picking the wrong player.

We are well coached without the ball. The shape is good. Our issue is, with the ball we are poor, and if we try to be in any way expansive we get exposed.

However, life is about finding sweet spots. Playing as we have, with hopefully Dominic Calvert-Lewin getting fitter, Gordon getting more consistent and Gray having the odd goal flush he has is about as good as we can hope for.

What is absolutely not needed currently, is a move to go kamikaze and start trying to emulate a top 6 side. It won't work. We will get hammered, and we will get relegated.

Ancelotti, the optimal manager in the world currently recognised this, and developed a system with 4cb's on the pitch, or often using 3cb's. He realised quite early on there was no point having lofty dreams. Be hard to defeat, and don't concede set pieces. We have managed that now.
Whatever are you doing, posting logic and reason, I mean heads are gonna explode.

A great post and spot on.

One month. We just have to get lucky once in a 90 minute stretch. Been awhile since a proper Pickford howler too.

England manager Frank Lampard would be great for us as well. Help us Gareth Southgate, your our only hope.

Lampard aint retiring at 44.

Look I get what your saying and again, its up the manager to get the players firing.

But do you really think he takes Gray to 1 side before a game and says "Demz, if you have a chance to find a team mate, ignore that impulse and shoot from 50 yards".

Well we finished 10th, with a points total that would typically get 6/7th.

The season before under Carlo, we showed form that equated to around 57 points a season, so again 7th. Its not great, but honestly it would be a sizeable achievement on what has followed.

A genuine question, and I'm not getting at you here, but did you watch us during the early Moyes days? We sort of need similar now.

He built a steady, unspectacular team, that slot started finishing top half, before adding to those foundations. It cant be done in 6 months.

Not sure how we ever beat Leicester or Southampton seeing as we weren’t trying to win
Tbf Saints was solid too.

Leicester we beat by getting some good fortune.

But we should be taking endeavor like that to every match. Leeds turned up at Anfield on a long losing streak with a manager who might have gotten the boot and went to win the match. There is no excuse for what we did at Spurs and Newcastle.

No mate, I was still in the single digits when Moyes took over.

I don't think he's responsible for Gray being the worst decision maker I've ever seen.

I do think Gray has enough natural ability beyond that to do more than what we're seeing from him.

And fwiw none of the forwards make good decisions. Now they all have previous for that but as manager you might want to try and work on it.
