2022/23 Frank Lampard

He should’ve just tried turning Michael Keane into Jaap Stam too instead of recruiting 2 new centre backs imho.
Why exactly does Frank get credit for his management when his CBs bail out his helplessly pinned back side?

The manager should elevate the team too. If he's just putting players out then let Kenwright do it and save some money.

I only know stuff from when they were involved at Arsenal mate and it was Usmanov that was the footy fan not Farhad, things can change though.
Fair enough. Hard to know I guess. I quite randomly met him personally during his Arsenal days, before we were a sparkle in his eye, and he was very chatty about football and mentioned he often screens matches and gets a load of people over to watch etc. Might have been an act though.

I'm not? I think Almiron is playing much better and is much improved. What you're ignoring is that the improvement came because he had a better manager and that it matters.
See iwobi with lampard. Howe has worked wonders with almiron and joelinton but the rest are as they were or bought in players. Most have had longer to settle than Lampards team have. Aside from Botman and Isak, the signings have been there for nearly a year now. Howes first job was making them hard to beat. He started with the defence, same as lampard.
Newcastle destroyed us with a front 3 of Wilson, Murphy and Almiron (I know he can't stop scoring suddenly but still). It isn't all about the players.
Destroyed us? With a 1 nil wonder goal. Considering the second half was mainly our midfield controlling it without us really creating, destroyed is a bit over the top.

But he gets credit for identifying an area of weakness, identifying the players who can fix that weakness, and not asking them to do anything that is beyond their capability.

That sounds very obvious, but it is a mistake several previous mangers (Allardyce aside) have made.

The CB's and goalkeeper have bailed us out, which is what he signed them to do. The shape is good without the ball. We are not an easy side to score against.

Fire Thelwell, make Frank DOF, and go hire someone to coach the team then.

It's impossible of course to determine exactly where this squad of players should be finishing in the league.

I think most of us would accept we are a firmly bottom-half squad.

If I were the owner or CEO, I'd think to myself that a 10-point improvement on last season would be a good well-done.

It's a reasonable expectation I think, based on a very low bar from last season.

I'd still say that accounting for the forward issues, seeing we should be able to continue turning more of last seasons defeats into this seasons draws.

If we added to our options in January, I'd say it was even more reasonable.

Below that target (45-46 points) and I would be disappointed.

This is actually a very fair point.

The previous 3 seasons were 59,50 (with an awful start) and 54. If you go back further, our range is anywhere from 48-72. So 39 is a big abberation.

However, we got 29 points from our last 34 games. for the majority of that season, we performed like a bottom 3 team. It was a fair reflection. We have lost our best player in the summer. So it's actually hard to put this team in a spot really. A lot of those players who got us the 50-60 points totals are gone.

As a par, I really think 45-50 points would be reasonable, par being the lower end. We are probably just about on course to do that.

But Thelwell doesn't coach the team. The team is well coached without the ball. What were you expecting?

Thelwell also signed Coady, who has been a fantastic signing. I can't see much sense in your suggestion this time mate. Some continuity is needed.
