It could be a contract extension clause within his contract that they've activated to get a fee, or a mutual agreement which benefits both parties.

In reality, it's more likely that the story is bull or something has happened for him and/or the club to change their mind.

He also would of signed a pre contract with any foreign team. Got higher wages and more of a signing on fee. Very strange that he as a player would screw himself out of money.
