Transfer Rumour Gabriel (Lille)

In all honesty I would probably agree with you on Zaha. It would be good to get in a couple of our main targets rather than have to drop down our list of hopefuls. Ever hopeful.

You see I also dont think we drop down our list either.

Other than Zaha whos price wasnt worth paying and Zouma, who Chelsea had no real interest in selling we have mostly got who we wanted. Of course we have been realistic and not bid for players we had no chance of getting, if we ignore Mata and Witsel and so on!

If the French decide to attempt completion of their current season after September 1st ,as they still might, this would presumably delay any putative transfer?

French season 2019/20 is cancelled by Government :) Clubs talking about asking to start league 20/21 in August( no fans ) to get TV money quicker to make up loss for this years season

While none of us know how close we were/are to a deal with Gabriel and how much of it was just conjecture to fill square inches in the papers none of us know about this Napoli stuff.
The only comment I would make is that I wouldn't believe 90% of what I read in the British press when they have stuff to write about I am not going to worry too much about what they make up when they haven't.

The only thing I would say, is king & hunter reported this and are on the money a lot of the time. Who knows what’s really going on.

Are we trying to get the price down? Are Lille trying to get us to get a move on?

Chelsea, us and now Napoli all meant to have landed him.

As @catcherintherye was saying, it could be his agent, or as i was guessing it may be his club leaking false info.

Still think we will get him.

I don't think the Chelsea links were ever that strong, they sort of came and went.

My suspicions are we are very keen, essentially had the deal set up in February, but Corona has hit and everyone is either putting deals on hold, or actively trying to renegotiate them down.

Thats not an easy conversation. LIlle have lost lots of TV money, they will not be in the CL next season, sponsorship lost etc. Broaching the subject that payment of a player will go down, will not be easy. However it's hard not to do. You would probably open up by saying you want 30% off the deal, on the basis that prices are likely to fall by more than that over the summer, but we are keen on the player and they get something of a bird in the hand early on. If they are not willing to play ball, the thought would be, "lets see where they are in late July if the player hasn't been moved on".

Napoli is a possibility. However the Italian league will more than likely be called in soon and the CL revenues they wanted have gone down. I'll be frank I don't think Napoli are massively plush currently, but we will see. Lille will no doubt "test the market" if the above has been done, or that Everton have paused.

Thats my gut feeling on whats happened. Maybe out of principle they will prefer to do a deal with Napoli to send a message to the wider football community-don't mess us about- especially with lots of other players they may be looking to sell. In that context the player may end up elsewhere.

I am quite easy about players. He looks a really good signing, but so does Sarr, so does Todibo etc. We have to use this crisis to our advantage and hammer down prices. It's probably unfortunate we had agreed a deal as it looks harsh on our part, but if we were entering the market for him now, it wouldn't be at a price point outlined in Febuary. Expect a lot of delays and hard discussions to deals this summer. Also there will be lots of players to go around, so we should be quite firm on our stance.

I said yesterday I’m not sure we are in a position to wait to long. I know brands will probably have 3/4 players lined up for each position. And if we lose out to a champions league team then so be it.

But if we are in a very strong position to sign the player and he is first choice, then I would rather we pay a slightly higher price to get the player in.

If we wait till July say and his price finally comes down to say 15mil, all off a sudden you could have spurs, who have maybe missed out on there first choice option to replace Vertonghen and then come in for Gabriel. And by that time maybe our 2nd and 3rds have gone elsewhere to.

I know there’s a lot of if’s, buts and maybes. But I would rather see us go out and get our first choice now, than try and haggle over 5mil

Hopeful on this one, it’s going to be a long time before anything is announced just due to the circumstances. But that headline doesn’t sell stories does it?
