I don't think the Chelsea links were ever that strong, they sort of came and went.
My suspicions are we are very keen, essentially had the deal set up in February, but Corona has hit and everyone is either putting deals on hold, or actively trying to renegotiate them down.
Thats not an easy conversation. LIlle have lost lots of TV money, they will not be in the CL next season, sponsorship lost etc. Broaching the subject that payment of a player will go down, will not be easy. However it's hard not to do. You would probably open up by saying you want 30% off the deal, on the basis that prices are likely to fall by more than that over the summer, but we are keen on the player and they get something of a bird in the hand early on. If they are not willing to play ball, the thought would be, "lets see where they are in late July if the player hasn't been moved on".
Napoli is a possibility. However the Italian league will more than likely be called in soon and the CL revenues they wanted have gone down. I'll be frank I don't think Napoli are massively plush currently, but we will see. Lille will no doubt "test the market" if the above has been done, or that Everton have paused.
Thats my gut feeling on whats happened. Maybe out of principle they will prefer to do a deal with Napoli to send a message to the wider football community-don't mess us about- especially with lots of other players they may be looking to sell. In that context the player may end up elsewhere.
I am quite easy about players. He looks a really good signing, but so does Sarr, so does Todibo etc. We have to use this crisis to our advantage and hammer down prices. It's probably unfortunate we had agreed a deal as it looks harsh on our part, but if we were entering the market for him now, it wouldn't be at a price point outlined in Febuary. Expect a lot of delays and hard discussions to deals this summer. Also there will be lots of players to go around, so we should be quite firm on our stance.
