Transfer Rumour Gabriel (Lille)

I would think the Lille president is a very reliable source regarding Lille players.
I would too but the only quote from the Lille president on Gabriel that I can find is the one Paddy Boyland has tweeted and he makes Walter Mitty look like George Washington banging on about his bloody cherry tree.

Historically I think french club presidents are the least reliable sources about anything regarding their clubs. Most of them are lunatics aren’t they?

I just googled the quote and;

Apparently the quote is behind this paywall;

I am not even convinced we are in for the player.
This saga has been going on for months and it seems to be all coming from the selling clubs side.
I think they are trying to promote interest in the player and they are not able to get in the fee they expected for him.
I would not be surprised if he is sold at a fee far lower than anything quoted so far.

He would fall into the category of young player with potential but a risky signing nonetheless.

No one to blame but ourselves - we had him at finch farm in feb. if he goes somewhere else instead it’s on brands

Not really. We were about to sign him and then a GLOBAL pandemic hit, in which we would not know our finances. hell if the EPL did get scrapped, which was on the table, we would have to re-pay tv money.

It's unfortunate, but it is what it is.

Had a medical and all set to sign before pandemic hit, via the telegraph.

"Gabriel expected to be Ancelotti's first signing"

And do not be mistaken he will be bought for the first team immediately.

We were interested. We backed off due to Covid uncertainty way back when per various reports. None of the usually reliable guys have suggested we have renewed interest that I have seen. This may be because a few weeks ago in a Dutch interview with De Telegraaf Brands implied (not stated baldy but certainly hinted) that priorities were changing (to CM and winger??).

It would make sense to me that with a lot of uncertainty over how much we can raise from sales & how much wage room we can free with loans we would need to try to address our biggest needs first. Gabriel might be right player, wrong time for us. I will not be surprised if we only loan a CB late window when the season has started as we have 4 with Branthwaite who though flawed are better than our CM options.
