Gareth Barry

If it is true then great - Barry is the type of player that looks after himself and will be good for McCarthy's development. Then get him on the coaching team, after the 3 years.

A bit of a dilemma perhaps, here? He'd be decent for 2 seasons, and would probably stay, but if he's offered 3 seasons in the USA, would that move the goalposts?

I'd like to keep him, myself.

Scorn was poured on this earlier today, I heard. Just a rumour (sadly). Hope it's actually true, personally.

I think if he'd seriously take a 3 year deal in the MLS over a 2 year contract with us then his mind clearly isn't on football. He could play for us for two years and still probably get a good contract in the US !

It would suit him to get a 2+1 off us so if he is feeling a bit after two years he will easily get a good 2 year deal in US so it keeps his options nicely open for 4 years effectively if he stays fit. Which European qualified team will offer him better than us?

I think we're definitely signing Barry - or at least, have definitely made this offer - know why? Because it's been reported everywhere as 'Everton ready to offer £11m for Barry' even though £9m of it is wages. I've variously seen £9m quoted too - basically 100% wages - and can you think of any other club who would report wages as if it were a transfer fee, so as to appear as though more money is being spent?

Typical Everton. Which makes it sound to me like an official line

wouldn't be arsed if it was 3 years, he still got miles left in the engine. Would rather give him 3 years then lose him over an extra year,
