That's why he may be playing even though he's been playing god awful.

That's what raised my attention, never seen someone play so bad yet keep his place so regularly...well apart from howard like

Just be good if someone actually knew, apparently the rumour leaked from someone close to the first team who has been at goodison for a lifetime

To bring it out then, need some one to stick a suggestion on twitter.

Has anybody close to the club heard this about Gareth Barry's contract. Apparently a stipulation in the agreement states that barry has to play in 85% of games during the first 24 months of his contract. It was the main reason he signed for us.

I wonder if Howard on the side has some thing similar in his contract which might explain his selection.

Surely he can't be happy with the way he's playing while out of form though.

Also, what happens if he's simply not selected, which is the manager's prerogative? He'd still be paid.

It's not like he's selected and not turning up, in which case he'd be punished by the club - this is the reverse, how could he "punish" the club for 'breach of contract' apart from walking out and being jobless?

You were quick on the edit there Groucho. Any manager agreeing to such terms would need their head testing.

If the contract thing is correct then its silly having it for 2 years, 1 year would of been understandable after his form from last season. Martinez is a bit unlucky really because no one knew he'd turn out this bad. Hopefully he gets sold in the summer

I'm not saying anyone's a liar, as things like this are often a case of Chinese whispers, but I don't believe this rumour.

Well as a professional you'd expect him not to be happy with his form.

I know a lot of players get performance bonuses which make up a percentage of their weekly wage so not playing could possibly affect that. When I heard it today I thought it possible, due to some of things I used to get told back in the late 90's from a former youth product and (handful of games) first teamer.

If everton were to breach I'd suspect it'd be a penalty payment rather than a breach of contract.

We all know that these contracts nowadays are like war and peace, players requesting that they remain top earner and god knows what else

It'd be interesting to see if anyone could confirm it or deny it. Certainly got my ears pricked, not one for spreading rumours myself so general discussion topic ;)

Be interesting to see how many games he starts next year lollol

What's the performance bonus based upon?

100% agree with this. How a manager could sign a contract like that would be suicide for the dressing room. Any player playing out of their skin being dropped for someone who is playing garbage would destroy team morale.

Time for a switch me thinks.

1 holding DM - McCarthy/besic

2 CM's just in front out of
Barkley/Osman/Gibson.

We don't need 2 holding players every game. Barry won't/shouldn't be starting next season. Let's try something new!

...................Robles...................
..Coleman..Stones..Jags..Baines..
...................McCarthy...............
.............Barkley...Gibson...........
...Lennon....................Mirallas...
...................Lukaku..................

Id personally have him rotating with Gibson and Barkley, as he likes to get foward. I guess he's sort of like Gibson, plays well foward or back and knows when/where to cover open ground...

Wow! This thread has everything - a scapegoat, a conspiracy theory, an obtuse dig at the manager and chairman. And all in a week when there are no fixtures.

Can't wait for the next 100 pages.
