He's probably fooked as RM is over reliant on him. Had something to prove last year in a WC year, and I imagine feels Un-droppable to some extent.
He's still a very good player and his posistioning makes up for his lack of pace. But with the options we have he should be rested/rotated more no doubts.
I'd also say roberto's poor selections in the front four has left Barry and others with no out ball unlike last year!

I just think his age is becoming the problem. It's not like he's turned in to a bad player. He is getting caught on the ball due to slowing down and I think Martinez could do him a favour by dropping him and playing Barkley and Besic in the middle until McCarthy is back.
Some of his poor play is his own fault so I agree on that. Misplacing a lot of passes so he needs to sort that part of his game out.

I can't believe how many games he's played regardless of performances. Surely Martinez knows to get the best out of older players they need to be rotated?
His obsession with putting Barry in there and always playing with 2 holding midfielders is bizarre and really is holding the team back.

So if Besic or any other player open him on wing he dosent know how to play or Barry is slower with Besic , no Barry is just old and hes form decline , If hes CD he could push to not notice one more year or two, but on CM u feel that , Xavi is at 34 much worse player then he was at 32. It just way of CM position. We need to Play with Barkley behaind Lukaku or in CM not on wing , Lukaku and Eto can play togheter only if we play 442 . I do not know what Martinez is doing at all .

also that we pretty much allowed an aging midfielder to hold us over a barrel during negations, if he was that important, i dont personally believe he was, good player like but still, then there is something wrong that needed addressing proactively, the signing of besic hints at this, but the gaffer needs to recognise it with his selections a bit more

Before his injury he was doing fine. Obviously he's been crap the last 5 games but rushing him back won't have helped him. He should be dropped from the first 11 and used as a rotation option but he's still a very good player and can offer a lot to us.
