Have you watched us this year? He's been putting McCarthy to shame.

As long as he plays like this, he can go on for another 3 years as far as I care.

McCarthy's been poor this year and Barry's had a few decent games but that still doesn't change the overall balance of the side. As long as Roberto continues to play the same midfield pairing every game then some games (like Sunderland) it will suit Barry, other games (like Liverpool) we will drop points because our midfield is not progressive enough. Don't mind him as a squad player for tactical variety, but if Martinez wants him to start every game then I'd rather that option just wasn't available. No team can play a mid 30s player in centremid every game, the league has moved on.

Our central midfield is horribly unbalanced to be fair. Besic should come in to replace Barry in the next season or two, but I don't want to write him off purely because of his age. Still very useful to us. McCarthy/Besic probably wouldn't work either, we badly need a version of Gibson who has a proper body.

Exactly, I don't mind Barry as an option, it just doesn't suit every game. He's great at sitting deep, stealing the ball then launching a counter, so against top teams of teams that come at you gung-ho (like Sunderland) he can look good at releasing Ross on the charge. Against teams who defend deep it's been proven that Him and McCarthy do not have the craft to break teams down. You therefore have to put creativity further up the pitch (what Martinez did in his first season) or you put it in the middle (what Gibson did v WBA etc) when you do neither you end up with Martinez's second season, completely blunt in attack. Of course you could always put creativity in the middle and Uptop like top teams do but recent Everton managers seem to be allergic to that.

I can't stand him as a player full stop. I think he is vastly overrated and I think it's criminal he starts every game. People saying he played well on Sunday, I thought once again he was bang average. I think people must listen to commentators I just agree. Watch the game again from Sunday and focus on Barry. He gave the ball away countless times and if he is here for a few more years we will never progress. I find it concerning that Martinez thinks Barry is a key player for us.

Has nothing to do with the commentators for me. Watch the amount of times he was in the right place at the right time to prevent a Sunderland move.

I think the main time you notice Barry is when he is not on the pitch. Against Barnsley we got totally ripped apart (by a league one side!) through the middle as we didn't have his composure on the ball. Same against Reading and against Norwich. He struggles against pace, and that's why he picks up so many bookings. But we miss him when he isn't there.

I agree that by the end of the season I hope to see a partnership developing between McCarthy and Barkley/Cleverley/Besic, but for me I'd still have Barry starting every league game at the moment.

He is a very good player and his main skill is being in the right place at the right time. He is a lot slower on the ball and can be caught out at times and his slowness makes him concede many free kicks but being honest we miss his leadership when he is not there. Don't think he will continue until his 40's though...well not at a high level. Like to see him and Osman in a race.

Wow.

Whenever someone says Barry is rubbish at football I just instantly ignore them as they clearly have only ever played football on a games console.

Maybe they just watched him last season when we came 11th in s league with 7 decent teams? He was a good player, but like Howard is now on the decline. His old form will reemerge sporadically and certain tactical situations will suit his game but we've already seen the other side to his game this season: failure to break poor sides down, giving the ball away when under pressure, needless fouling in dangerous areas resulting in suspensions, zero goal threat. As we go on only one side of his game is going to prevail. Like Howard he will only get worse.

I honestly don't mind any reasoned debate about any player, if someone can articulate why Barry is deserving of playing every game for us at his age then I am all ears. What I find infantile though is the argument 'you don't understand football' when discussing players in this Everton squad, 'you can't see his importance to how we play'. We came 11th last year playing a very boring brand of football so clearly no one is that important, no ones experience is invaluable, no one is doing an irreplaceable job that the average fan can't see, we are not playing a formation that you need a coaching degree to understand. What we served up was crushingly average football.

According to this forum though none of the players are to blame (apart from Alcaraz), nor is the manager, nor are the tactics. If you criticise any of them you don't understand the game. Our entire failure last season is simply put down to 'well we had Europe'.

Genuine question.

If we have a blend of attacking players in front of the 2 holding players - Kone bringing the ball down and linking up, Deulofeu a more direct player putting crosses in, Lukaku holding the ball better, Barkley probing and trying to "break the lines", Coleman marauding, Baines back and advanced wide left, Stones bringing the ball out... - do you not think the onus is on those players to break teams down, rather than the man picking the ball up from the goalkeeper?

Your point seems to be akin to blaming Matic for Chelsea's current inability to score goals.

And that is where you are clearly wrong pal. Not on the Barry front but on the only played football on a computer. Football is all about opinions. Just because I disagree doesn't mean I've never played football. I've played open age football, and coach a football team and have a FA Level 2 coaching badge. That does not mean I know more about football than somebody who just watches on a computer, I was just proving your comment to be false. I don't like Barry, I think he is a poor footballer, just my opinion. In his first season I thought he was fantastic. Last season and this think he is poor. He gives the ball away far to often, he is to slow, Is not very creative

I did. and he didn't. Like at all. So I looked at what the stats say: look, 90% of his passes found target.
You're wrong.
