Gay footballers about to come out

I personally think that most subjects including race and sexuality should be open to humour but not abuse, it's important that people aren't too soft and take offence to every single thing that's said about them. A good sense of humour and the ability to rip back along with the sense to stand up for yourself when abused should be required to get anywhere in life. I barely see any difference to ripping someone's mar or something than ripping there sexuality or even race and if done in the right way both should be taken as light hearted fun but the general rule theses days is everything is perceived as being abusive.

I'd deffo join one of them bumming groups if Everton had one.

I was satirising the best-rated DailyMail comments about generalised perceptions over impossibly-large groups of people, but carry on

...in order for it to be accepted as normal within a certain culture, someone must first normalise it.

In club culture and big-city culture, it's long been normalised. In football culture, it's not. Justin Fashanu came out and a few years later he committed suicide.

All a gay man wants is to feel free to go out with his partner just as heterosexual couples can go out. He doesn't feel free to do this as he's waiting on someone else to make the first move, as it were. Just takes time. Tom Daly, the swimmer, came out. As Bruce said we've had a ref come out. Only a matter of time until a prominent Prem footballer comes out. They'll be a big media circus, but this means subsequent 'coming-outs' won't be. Law of diminishing returns and all that.

I reckon most gay footballers are just waiting for the first poor sod to come out and take the brunt of the media hype, so that they won't have to.

I had an inkling of you were being sarcastic.

You're nearly right - but they're in your face in all walks of life, and always will be. Do you think they'll stop constantly reminding us that they're gay when these poor sods players are 'brave' enough to 'come out' and finally banish this perceived persecution?

They won't. There'll still be those gay parades & suchlike. We'll still have elton john shrieking abar anything & everything. We'll still hear gareth thomas telling us he's gay at every opportunity (And making money out of it at the same time).

Perhaps if they just got on with it and left the rest of society alone...

Anyone who thinks that they wouldn't get ripped has their head in the clouds, its part of life to rip things that are different to ourselves. This Forum makes fun of homosexuals all the time. Is that massively offensive? not to me.
We make fun of everyone all the time. We are non-discriminatory in that respect and I for one believe that helps to 'normalise' our differences making them less of an issue.

Tbh and this is just how i feel; people saying 'nowt' do with me really shouldn't bother posting, just indivualisitc self-rewarding and those thinking gay football support groups is too much? christ almighty
If a minority group feels the need to form a group for solidarity and support then they obviously feel that there are benefits to that.

Also, if more of us were individualistic self rewarders then maybe people wouldn't feel the need to form these groups you antagonistic jizz wipe x

Yeah, they don't want beating up, verbally abused, discriminated against and run out from their families. Special treatment indeed.
Very, very few cases of this in the UK these days mate although I admit it still exists. Hopefully we will reach a point were no minority support group is necessary and I do agree with @The Cowboy to an extent regarding normalisation being the route to go down to make progress - activism etc is great to highlight an issue but is not a long term solution (in my opinion).

Because they HAVE to be 'in your face' abar it. To me & you (And most other people) it's no biggie. Tell that to the gays, and it's 'bigotry' because you're denying them the right to be in your face telling you that they're gay.

Starving them of the attention they crave, see?

Oh, apologies @dead_soft , I said 'The gays' again. I'm a right bigot, me...

Meanwhile, those doleites are, every one of them, still screwing the system, ask CH5 or the dailies excess, heil etc...

Tomorrow's headlines:

"Doleites are still scum, but elton john is gay...and he doesn't claim".

"Hooray for BRAVE gay footballers; death to benefit scrounging doleites."

'Bigotry' ffs. :dodgy: Get over yerselves.
Lad?

I've met flamboyant gay lads and I've also met and am good friends with a number of gay lads who exhibit none of these tendencies.

There are trumpets in all walks of life and if you buy into the stereotypes then we will never make progress as a society (and that's aimed at everyone reinforcing those stereotypes - gay and straight).

Lad?

Have to agree with all of those responses, including the antagonistic jizz wipe.

I was waiting for this one. I personally wouldn't be bothered if someone abused me for being white. It all depends how offended you want to be or how offended you want to be on someone else's behalf.

But the fact that you're white and the dominant culture in the society massively influences how that effects you surely ? If you were part of a society that had been oppressed for generations you might feel differently I'd suspect.

Music, movies every industry have had people previously looked on as straight coming out with out any real fuss, football is still seen as a bastion of working class males with a beer, women and footie attitude,so any player that announced their homosexuality is going to be very brave, it's difficult enough for the average person,so imagine being caught in a media circus over it,good luck to whoever eventually does it

*sigh*

Surely the worst way to overcome homophobia in football fans is to form a group for gay fans? Do they have a 'Black Spurs Fans' group? You overcome this nonsense by removing the factor, not by highlighting it.
Where's the LGTB forum on GOT???? This is blatant discrimination!!!

I don't care what a footballer does in his personal life if it isn't harming anyone. Not sure they should come out to the media though, to me it's just not news worthy.

Fed up of hearing this tripe. To end the so called gap, tell feminists to study engineering rather than gender studies.
