Why are the drums behind a perspex shield?

I noticed this on Friday, that some of the acts had smaller shields - like multiple small perspex shields. Not sure why, though.

Yeah I'd say they are still using a desk. There are ways to alter the sound coming through on the broadcast without impacting how it sounds for the live audience. Dont ask me how exactly though!

I first came across screens in front of drums in a church weirdly enough. They are there so the drums don't drown out the singing

Someone said it was to stop the drums swamping the vocals. But everything goes through a mixer and out of the massive sound system anyrate. You aint gonna hear a drum at the back of that field without massive amplication/mixing.
