...I suspect the move that led up to the chance Lukaku missed might be a clue to how we break. He appears to like the pace and power through the middle that Bolasie can provide in support of Lukaku. I watched some clips of the the other winger we are linked with from Lyon and he's another big lad with a powerful stride on him.
How often did Bolasie turn up in a central position for Palace? I dont remember that many. I might be way off but I always had him pegged as a player who just drifted left when Palace gained possession and looked for a ball over the top. Breaking centrally with a ball to feet pass and we could have a forward to alongside Lukaku. (His cross for Barkley's header was superb, btw.)

GRASS.

But yeah, ive heard Ronny scoffed at the suggestion that Ross couldnt play deeper, he kinda used the attitude, he will adapt or else.

As ive said, we either need a number 8 or we play Ross as a number 8 and buy a number 10, with any luck we buy BOTH!

And yeah I dont think punting will be a tactics 101, but we will certainly use it more than we did under "** *****".

That has to be it. Nothing else makes sense to me. If Barkley is played as he's been played he's going nowhere fast.

I think we will play quite narrow up top David, almost as a front 3, with the width coming from the fullbacks.

Baines is past the point of no return on that. And, tbh, though I like Coleman he's not top class. If FBs pushing on are corner stones to his system then he needs to go back for Bertrand at last.

Well hes been badly managed, Moyes decided he couldnt defend and stuck him on loan at Leeds, Martinez though the way to deal with was stuck him up top and worry about it NEVER, Ronny will be all over it, trust me David.

Well long term maybe David, I still think Coleman and Baines have something to offer personally, its probably something to be looked at in January or beyond.

Tbf to Martinez he gave him a lot of confidence to get on the ball and play. I think also he felt that someone like Eto'o could have come in and took up a role in behind Lukaku and drop RB back a bit more. He's the only manager so far to have actually played him in a DM role and I was surprised he didn't ever buy a playmaker to allow that to roll out more fully.

...somebody posted his stats when starting games for Palace as a striker and they were impressive. I don't recall seeing him in the 'inverted' winger role that he might be asked to play with us but he could be effective. As you say, it's a hybrid position so the wing play he demonstrated yesterday can also be used to effect.

I actually think we're kidding ourselves over players like this if we really are headed into a better era. Coleman and Baines are adequate and that's the extent of it. We've allowed ourselves to be complacent and just offer free passes to both. As far as I'm concerned neither has been good enough for a couple of seasons.

Ouch.

The last few years they have both certainly not been at their best, its not as pressing as you suggest IMO tho, think both will given at least till January to stake a claim.

.....the full back positions are interesting if we think the team shape includes wingers who come inside because it leaves lots of space for full backs to exploit. We lost so many goals under RM because our full backs went missing leaving the CBs exposed to a single pass (Chelsea away etc). This shape might lend itself more to marauding full backs so it could suit Coleman more than Baines but they will have to remain disciplined.

Apologies if you have discussed it at length already but is any one else nervous about three at the back as plan A? Never liked it myself and every time I see it I just see big spaces behind the wing backs that opposition can pour into and bigger than usual spaces between the three defenders.

Mirallas implied in an interview that the plan is to go 4 at the back with 2 wingers when our injured players Lukaku and Coleman return from injury.

Ronny prefers 4-2-3-1, but seen already hes very flexible.

But going forward I can see a lot more 4-2-3-1 over everything else, almost like this :

GK
FB - CB - CB - FB
DM - CM
LW -- ACM -- RW

Thanks mate. It is always about what players do without and without the ball but I will feel a lot happier knowing our full defensive third of the field is well covered. Just got to get them to close down, mark up and get stuck in haha.!!
