Goats 2016/17 In depth tactical squad analysis thread

GK
Joel Robles
*

Robles took over from Howard and IMO we looked a lot tighter at the back, we still conceded some silly goals, but he came in and looked decent, but does decent cut it? I think we need to go and grab a really good GK, not a decent 1, but a top drawer game saving legend, I would have no complaints with retaining Robles as a cup keeper and a solid back up, but how would Robles feel about that?

I wont speculate on names, we have the transfer thread for that, but the spine of any team is important and we really need to get in a really good keeper as a matter of urgency.

RB
Seamus Coleman
*

60k, what a player, seemed like he actually forgot how to cross last season, hes never been AMAZING at crossing, hes more the cutting inside and rifling into the roof of the net RB and as a full back hes been superb over the years for me. Defensively his positional play is sometimes lacking, but we have a manager now who values and knows how to defend.

Ideally we would sign somebody to come and push Seamus for his place, keep him on his toes and able to slot in when needed, as an extra this chap could also play CB at a push, but its difficult for people to play RB and CB as easily as they used to in the past, the modern fullback is a world away from the likes of Tony Hibbert defending first type RBs.

LB
Luke Garbutt
Bryan Oviedo
Leighton Baines

Now im gonna try and be totally honest in this whole write up and potentially leave myself open to much vaulting, but here goes, I personally wouldnt have given Oviedo a new contract, I like the boy, hes got heart and he gives everything he has, at times hes superb and I know im being totally unfair but I dont think hes good enough, BUT, as a squad option, I can see the value and the reason he was given 1.

Garbutt is a strange 1 for me, the floppy haired beaut looked decent when he played, wand of a left foot and didnt look bad at the back, but I just really dont like him, cant put my finger on it, sorry Luke, you seem a decent lad, so forgive me, you still have time to grow on me, but I wouldnt shed tears to see you leave, hopefully you ram these words down my throat next season.

Leighton Baines has his doubters, but I will never be 1 of them, an utterly superb specimen of a man and football player.

No transfers needed here, POSSIBLY could afford to lose Garbutt or Bryan, but Garbutt still has potential and Oviedo is a good body to have around.

CB
Phil Jagielka
Ramiro Funes Mori
John Stones
*?

Jags is not getting any younger but showed no signs last season and was on the whole fairly decent, the whole defence will benefit from a change of manager and I personally am a big fan of our Captain.

Mori came into the league and looks a real player, not convinced on his ability to deal with crosses, but as with Jags also somebody else that will benefit from a change in manager.

John Stones is just utterly superb, I wouldnt sell him for any amount of money, well I say any amount, every player does indeed have a price, but the lad will be a great, retain him as long as possible.

We could probably do with another CB truth be told, although do we REALLY need 4 CBs with the likes of Galloway, Holgate, Browning, Pennington waiting for a chance? Not sure, we really lack a big grock to just beast teams, but its not a major need for me.

CM
Muhamed Besic
James McCarthy
Tom Cleverley*
Gareth Barry
Darron Gibson

What can I say about Mo Besic that I havent already said before? The Bosnian Zidane, the finest midfielder of his generation, its probably around the time he should start showing it. Been very unlucky with injuries and showed the world he should never be allowed to play RB ever again. A player that at times showcases the talent he has, but also shows he isnt the finished product. If given a run in the side could prove to be a really useful player, could play as a DM or CM for me, but offensively his shooting isnt great but can certainly pick a pass and isnt afraid to take a man on. Would think this will be a pivotal season in his Everton career, he either gets a chance and takes it or I think he will look to move on within 12months.

James, James, James, what has happened to you? On his day 1 of the better DMs in the league for me, off his day you wonder just what does he do. We all know the player he can be, lets hope we see that again soon, I think we will personally.

The Clev is a strange player, prior to us signing him I watched him a lot and he looked decent, since signing, apart from the odd flashers here and there hes really not that great, dont get me wrong, as a squad option, sure, yeah, but as a starter? God no, not good enough in CM or DM for me, sell for anything we can get.

Gaz Baz, a man who laughs at age for the number it is, without question our best player last season, when all around him was falling about, Gaz Baz strolled through it all with a face we would all die for. He was Robertos man, will Koeman play him in every game? Who knows, im sure thats something that will be discussed, I can see Barry looking to move on tho personally, time will tell on that.

And that leaves Darron Gibson, why we gave him a contract is really beyond me, lets hope he shows why, at 1 point without question our best midfielder and is he can stay fit and stay healthy we do have a great player on our hands, watch this space.

For me massive rebuilding needed here, we really need to sign 1, MAYBE 2 creative/box to box/number 8 players, we need to add some real quality in there, something that is lacking big time in my humble view.

TBC

I just think we are gonna struggle to retain Stones and Lukaku, Stones especially will impact some of the younger lads, like Browning, Galloway, Holgate, if Stones goes will we buy 1 CB or 2 CBs? See how "they" get on in pre season and the first few weeks of the season, personally would be surprised if a few arent loaned out.

Think Stones will stay. We convinced him last year, now we have a new Owner and Manager, and could be on the verge of something special, another year to see how things progress could be attractive. Think Lukaku could go, although if he keeps stinking up the Euros that might change things, but i'd be tempted to cash in if we got offered £50m+...

The LB situation is a difficult one, as has been discussed many times before. Think Garbutt looks really good, and Oviedo is decent too, definitely worth keeping around in a perfect world. It's a shame in a way that they weren't slightly further apart age wise, then we could have had a nice transition between the three. Baines had to wait for his chance, and look what happened when he got it. Could Garbutt do they same given the chance? He's not gonna hang around if he's gonna be third string to Baines and Oviedo, so I think Bry may have to make way. Maybe we can swap him for an RB, although I quite fancy just letting some of the kids be Seamus' back-up there...

Any thoughts on Tyias ?

Galloway should be on here and Tarashaj is more of an Attacking Midfielder and should be in the same sort of role as ross.

Not many mate, honestly havent seen enough of the lad to judge him, from the brief glimpses hes looked decent, but would probably need to make a step up soon, hes still young tho, loads of time for the lad.

Ty was reportedly considered the best 1 v 1 defender we have, and basically a young Sylvain Distin. He can also flex out to RB, although when I watch him, I see athletic CB not a RB, but nice to know he can play out there. Under a Koeman, he could possibly make a giant leap this year or next. I wouldn't bring in someone ahead of him since we have a few more miles left in Jags, and if Stones stays, absolutely no reason to bring in someone. Galloway is similar on the left. We know he can play LB decently, but will be a CB. Let's start that process this year. I don't see why Garbutt can't be the lad we saw at the tail end of year before last. Injuries really derailed his season last year, so I'll discount that and believe my eyes from the previous season. The lad can play LB in the prem.
