So 24 player squad then (as Niasse and Martina will never get a game).

Brands has trimmed that down brilliantly, it now resembles a proper squad with balance and options.

Next year will be more about fine tuning the team, rather than a mass cull

Sadly a LOT of them will still need culling.

So suspect next summer will be more of the same, I mean I doubt we will hit the 20s again, but theres still plenty of work to be done.

Its a process, we have very bad players on very good contracts, thankfully we have less of them for now.

19 culled last summer, 21 this summer, yes some of them are loans so of course they keep coming back, but thats 40+ outgoing and 14 incoming in 12months, such a bloated crap squad.

Thankfully Brands has given Silva a bunch he CAN work with.

So just to get a jump on next year's deadweight list, assuming no one leaves in January.

Players out of contract at end of year (or, in Tarashaj's case, at end of loan):

Players we'll for sure want rid of (all these except Tosun will be in last year of their contracts):

Players we might want rid of, but will probably stay (this list is highly subjective):

So that still leaves us five high-salary players that will again be hard to move:
Bolasie, Sandro, Tosun, Schneiderlin and Walcott

Contract lengths are based on half-assed research, so some are likely wrong.

There are still 7 players ( not including Steks) that I would not bat an eyelid if they left as I don’t feel they are good enough for a squad hopefully challenging for top 4/6
That doesn’t include Sidibe or the highly rated GIBSON who we haven’t seen enough to form an opinion

The only dead weight that will be at the club and need binning next summer are

Walcott, Schneiderlin, Bolasie (all 1yr left)
Sandro, Tosun (2 years left)

The youngsters such as Dowell, Connelly, pennington etc may not be good enough but are not draining the club with high wages so there is no desperation to get rid.

I think for those youngsters it’s time to move on as well. They don’t seem to have made it to PL standard and I think it’s time to be ruthless in search of performance.

So we’ll want rid of all the home frowns then? I’m not sure we could do it if we wanted to. Need some to satisfy PL rules.

That list of outs is staggering. What an albatross around the clubs neck. When you think there is more to be done, added to last years cull and it’s ridiculous the position we got into. It will have tied Brands hands over the potential targets. I can only see our transfer business getting better from here on in.

If we think that Pickford, Fabs, Keane, Iwobi and Viking arent going anywhere soon, that means as you say we would need to keep some others in terms of numbers.

Oh I fully agree, the U23's dont look much and cant imagine most of them making it but they are on pittance in todays climate so unlike this year, we wont need to shift them to make space on the wage bill. As most of them cost nothing, we could even make small profits loaning them out.

Getting rid of the others I quoted (Schneiderlin, Tosun, Bolasie, Walcott and Sandro) is an absolute must though and saves another £450k+ off the wages.
 
Moving Sandro et al off the wage bill is essential. The youngsters need to move for the good of their career. I don’t think there should be any past 21 unless they are in the first team squad.

Could do with one of our 2nd or 3rd choice keepers being HG, possibly Virginia is from his time at Arsenal. If JJK doesn't come back into the squad next season I'd expect us to sign a young English right-back, pretty sure Reece James was our main target for RB until the Chelsea transfer ban and his injury.
