Going for Gold: Holland vs Spain

One thing I don't think you can claim against Spain is that they perpetuate the media's misconception (that dave's latched onto here) about their style of play. I've heard several of the Spanish players talk about it being 'important that we stick to our plan of keeping the ball and tiring the opposition'. That's the point of how they play, to go through huge periods of the game using very small amounts of energy and being under absolutely no pressure defensively. When you combine that with Xavi, Iniesta or Villa having the ability to find a gap somewhere and create a chance every now and then, it's very difficult to beat. It's like counter-attack football, but they have possession whilst they're defending, if that makes any sense.

That's why it's sometimes satisfying to see a team let them have the ball, win it back maybe eight or nine times in a whole game, but a few of those times, bam, bam, bam, 3-0 to us, try attacking the goal you stupid ****s. Inter did it to Barca, Chelsea did it to Arsenal and I think Germany would have done it to Spain if they had Muller. It's pleasant every now and then.

Agreed. Apparently though, for some, WCs are not the measure of greatness...the CL is. If you can humiliate Olympiakos in Athens over 90 minutes you're up there with Maradona, Cruyff and Pele. :unsure:

eh, maybe. WC is still the gold standard.

cant wait for this one its being shown on a big screen at silverstone there will be a great atmosphere and 150 coming my way if they win. Van persie to come good with a brace in a 3-2 thriller. johnny h to score the winner frimfrom the half way line

Fair point. On the whole - and notwithstanding the points made about Senna's impact - maybe the style is self confessed possession football and they're being consistent this tournament in producing it when others are looking at a rupture with the way they played two years ago. It could be that Torres' current hopeless movement/form has made them much more predictable and, therefore, less pleasing on the eye.

This is the way I see it:

Spain = 2 RS players + 1 Ex-RS player...

Holland = 2 RS players, but 1 Evertonian!

So come on Holland, tear Spain a new one!

How awesome would it be if Johnny H scores the match winner!
