GOODISON MEMORIES

Looks a great book. Well done.;)
For completeness; the Palace players on the front cover are the superb John Jackson in goal, one of my all time favourite Palace players, and regular left back John Loughlan.
August 16 1969, Palace’s first ever away game in the top flight of English football (and also their first defeat!) Everton 2 Palace 1 att: 50700.

Whose the toffee beside big Joe? He has the head of Baines in that photo
As for Crystal Palace, God! How many times did I used to get Gerry Queen as a swapsey in those big old football cards. Interesting kit they had as well, thanks for the memories....

No on or off, of course it is. The one and only Jimmy Husband...unplayable on his day...think a young Ronaldo with some Sterling...but his days were relatively short in number and never seemed the same player after first Dave Mackay nearly snapped him in half, he seemed to be getting back to it then various Greek guys form Parathinakios kicked lumps off him at Goodison...the away leg, the semi - all down hill for more than just him
Downhill for all of us

The day the music died;
The 3 men I admired the most, they all left early for the coast and we were singing...

…I’m so old I remember him being a key member of the side that won the FA Youth Cup in 1965. Terrific player Jimmy Husband, I’m sure he’d be an England international these days.
iirc, there were 7 Everton players that Ramsey named in Oct 1969 for his initial squad of
40 for the Mexico WC.
Memory fails now, I know Husband was one of them and will guess st the other 6 (Keith Newton hadn't signed yet)
West, Wright, Labone, Harvey, Ball and, knowing Ramsey, I'll only offer Kendall as a provisional, with Hurst as an outsider.

Looks great and another book I'll be grabbing - well done Steve.

It's also reminded me I need to take loads more photos when I'm at the grand old lady before we move to our new house by the river....I'm going to be in absolute bits.

Keith Newton was with us then so he was one. Wright, Labone, Ball, all played, while Harvey and Royle were in the provisional squad but left out of the final 22. Kendall's absence was bewildering but it was a very strong squad, better than 66 for me.

Palace have always had nice kits.
Especially the away kits, there was a white one with 2 vertical stripes in the middle of the chest.
Looked a bit like the Lancia Delta markings.

Re-read my OP we signed Newton just before Christmas, Ramsey's preliminary squad came out in October

Why was Kendall never capped for England? Just too much competition in his position?

Only Alf Ramsay would know the answer to that! He had his favourites and tended to stick with them regardless of club form. There were also fewer substitutes so it was much harder to win a cap. Kendall certainly should have got in between 71 and 74 when Ramsay inexplicably picked Arsenal's Peter Storey, who wasn't even half the footballer Kendall was.

He's got to be one of the best players never to play for England. Harvey only got one cap as well!
