Been touring the south of france, only 600m from the summit of the col de mente suffered excruciating cramp whiched caused my quads to lock, practically fell off and couldnt bend my knees for a minute or so. Then every other muscle in my leg cramped up. After a few mins i managed to crawl the rest of the way, luckily there was a cafe at the col.

Got a tough ride again tomorrow, any way of avoiding this happening again?

I suspect it's a mixture of heat and effort. I suffered a similar thing on the final bit of the Mortirolo, and it's horrible. That day was mid 30's, and a really hard ride, so I think it was probably a mixture of sweating a lot, and the ride being a lot for my legs.

Do you have enough gears to gently spin up the climb or are you grinding up?

Good day today, basically drank loads of water with those sports tabs last night still sore though. Got plenty of gears, its just a low grind up the cols with the panniers on.

Arrived in Austria today and had a quick 25km loop down into the valley and back up again to dust off the legs after a 10 hour drive here. Really is cracking to be in the mountains again.

Smoking won't really affect your performance that much initially. as you need to perform better to continue gaining and improving further along the line it'll have a more noticeable effect.

If you're looking to improve your shape a little, get better 'tone' and look a bit better try mixing circuit training, spinning, and a day or two in the gym doing a mix of heavy and light exercises for all the major muscle groups. keep it simple. You don't have to be too clever.

No problem. fitness is quite simple for most people. Instructors and trainers like the go boost of talking in riddles and most don't know how to put info across in a way that's easy to understand and use.

Rode the val Martello climb today. Around 22km long, and the scene of the finish of the epic Queen stage of the Giro this year. Beautiful day for it, and some stunning scenery. Sure is amazing how quick the pros are though. Strava (I know, I know) suggest I'm in the top 15% for the climb, yet Nico Kelderman this year still took 16 minutes out of me. Incredible.

My new skates have finally arrived!

They are custom molded to my feet - speed skaters are hugely fickle about their equipment and skate fit because of the carbon construction of the boot.

I took them out and skated a marathon in them last night - no problem at all. I can't believe that they've turned out so well. Normally with a stock boot it takes weeks or even months to "break in" before you are comfortable on it. They are not cheap but I've wasted much more money on previous skates that I found uncomfortable and would always struggle in.
