My new skates have finally arrived!

They are custom molded to my feet - speed skaters are hugely fickle about their equipment and skate fit because of the carbon construction of the boot.

I took them out and skated a marathon in them last night - no problem at all. I can't believe that they've turned out so well. Normally with a stock boot it takes weeks or even months to "break in" before you are comfortable on it. They are not cheap but I've wasted much more money on previous skates that I found uncomfortable and would always struggle in.

Do you do skate on ice too? Cross country skiing?

I don't do any ice, partly because you're bound by facilities, and partly because I would find the idea of going around in circles a little repetitive and tedious. I did dabble with Inline track racing and generally that's what I found. I do admit that it is really good for improving your technique, and it also makes for compelling TV. I'm sure if I did more track-type stuff it would make me a better skater, but the only inline track near me is almost 2hrs away. Generally I stick to marathons and other outdoor endurance events for competition, and group skates for fun/fitness.

Cross-country? ugh no.. those roller skiers I see in the park look so ungainly and inelegant!

@evilwebby where do you skate? Parks, pavements, roads? You must be going at some speed, isn't it a little hazardous?

We're slower than bikes in general, so speed isn't really that big of a deal. To give you an idea, I will usually average between 20-25km/h in training. Unlike bikes we don't have brakes so its always important to look ahead and be careful of upcoming obstacles. Yes - parks and roads make up the majority of my skating. Not so much pavements - colliding with a pedestrian doesn't look very good, but arguing with traffic is fair game. Roads inside parks are the best :)

We run a couple of streetskates like this every week:

This really is a top thread. Easily one of the best threads on the forum. Everyone is doing different things. Such variation going from person to person and everyone has their own advice, questions and answers. A great thread this

Ive got 5 left so might as well go with it.

im now on the search for more, anyone got any recommendations on pre working out supplements.... im looking at you @steken1

The "best-before" date is a food standards requirement, even on foods (if an energy gel can be called as such) that will keep for far longer. I find it slightly ludicrous that honey is sold with a best-before date :)

On pre/during/post supplements, depending on your goals look into Creatine, BCAAs, caffeine, D-Ribose and omega-3s ;)

well im on a low carb diet, so i need something low carb, i i have creatine, but im not sure if thats for giving u a pre work out boost? would creatine be enough?

well, low carb diets gives you no energy. i do 40 mins of cardio, and then a set of weights usually 8 machines 12 rep x 3 sets, then 4 sets of 25 reps of a abs crunch machine twice a session. 4 or 5 times a week depending on work.

i wanna build my stamina, and tone up
