Drinking two nights a week is a fair amount?
It depends mate

I'm not so sure?

I didn't mean as in getting rat arsed, but one drink - for example last night I had one bottle of beer when I'd finished work, but that was my first drink all week.

And if you go the pub twice a week, I wouldn't consider that excessive, probably normal. Depends how much you drink obviously, but if I go out on a week night it'd never be more than 2-3 bottles (haven't been drinking pints). Last time I had a proper day session, got off the beers early anyway, but that was about four weeks ago.

Well done mate.

How about giving this is one a go, when you`re short on time ?. ( if you`re not too far away from a hill / slope / set of steps ).

Slow jog for a mile to your nearest high spot ( hill / slope / set of steps ) - will warm you up.

1 min going full pelt up the gradient - then walk or jog slowly down.

Repeat x 10.

Then slow jog home.

Should take you 30 mins and you`re normal running will benefit massively from the short sharp sessions.

I do this twice a week on days when I`m stuck for time.

It hurt like hell the first couple of weeks, but it`s massively improved my fitness on top of my general running.
Great training this. Did this few years ago when training for a marathon. Not sure if I could do it now though, might build myself uo for it.

Booze isn't good if you're training for endurance sport though. 3 bottles of beer is 600 calories or so, or the equivalent of a meal if you prefer (or around 50 minutes worth of running). If you have a burger or something afterwards, it all adds up.

By drinking though, I really do just mean one or two beers. Nothing heavy. Not followed by a sloppy meal. And as I said, I can count the amount of drinks I've had in the last four weeks on one hand.

@COYBL25 I'm gonna try the hill sprints on Thursday. Did a 4 miler yesterday as I only did a brief cardio in the gym on Monday, so wanted to get out. Not arsing about in 23 degrees today, so gonna get on with some interval in the gym.

Aye, not suggesting you need to cut it out or 'owt, just to be aware. As a cyclist weight is an issue, so I've kept a food diary for several years now, but even if you don't do it for that long, keeping one for a month or so can give you a better idea of what you're consuming vs burning, and it might shed some light on your weight gain. Sometimes we can eat more than we imagine.

Alcohol isn't good for athletes, but its not just about the calories.. it impares your body's recovery and adaptation from stress in all sorts of physiological ways, so you are less able to take advantage of your training.
That said, my alcohol consumption is pretty constant, training or no training :D

Yep I appreciate that mate. I've got this 10k in three and a half weeks, and I'm not planning on having a drink at all between then and now (I have no massive desire to and I planned all along that would be the case).

And I haven't actually gained weight, I was more wondering if there was any real fast-track to shed it in the space of a few weeks (in terms of different exercises). I want to get back into cycling, because other than using the watt bike at the gym I don't do it enough. Again, it's having the time though and for me running seems to work best, so I'd rather concentrate on that for the time being.

@Bruce Wayne how much are you into your cycling?

My dad's a complete nut about it, and has been since 2010 now. He normally gets in a ride per-day, weather dependant obviously, and then a big ride on a weekend - usually 80k - 100k I believe.

Lots of steep stuff then.

Yeh.

His daily rides will be around town so no more than 20 miles really - he'll usually cycle to the gym etc. Works from home so he'll take an hour out.

He's 62, so I sometimes have to remind him he's not Bradley Wiggins!

Him and his mate went out to the usual place we go on holiday to in Spain (Moraira, where Big Sam has 'Casa Big Sam'!), in May and did a week out in the hills over there.

Was not a million miles away (Granada) earlier this summer. Nice hills and great weather.
