GOT Needs Your Help

I just paid my 20 quid - or in real money $31 :)

Glad to help!

Nice one.

So as well as contributing financially, if we click on and view some of the adverts, that helps fund the site as well ?

We can't promote that as it violates terms, but visiting those of interests certainly helps.

Is there a way on Amazon to confirm our order gave you a percentage?

We're signed up to Amazon affiliates, who tell us currently we've earned;

So far;

UK Ordered Items 22:
£21.62

USA Ordered Items 23
$16.86

We get orders ordered through our link, and total %.

Info is detailed here, https://affiliate-program.amazon.co.uk/

I'll do it after payday (forum support/donation not ad block)

Nice one, but honestly just disabling adblock is enough :)

Do we get rep back if we all turn adblock off?

If only mate, if only. Shocking admission here but even I'm missing rep. If we could have it, we would.

Definitely gonna get a "forum supporter" thing in near future, even though I am quite new and young, but really, this forum deserves it all. My question is, does PaddyPower "stake 10, get 20 free bet" work out of UK, or specifically in this case for Serbia, aswell? If it does, it sounds amazing, would definitely use that at least couple of times, as I am on PP for quite some time now.

And for the end, I can give you one!

:D

Oi, oi.

I think it should mate yes, but as a young'un, I wouldn't encourage it. The bookies always win. That said, you can check the countries paddypower don't work in here: https://support.paddypower.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2/~/restricted-territories-for-paddypower.com

The ads aren't even pop ups, I don't understand why you need to disable them anyway.

Will become a forum supporter in the next week. I promise.

Nice one.

I'll be dead honest and say that I've never quite bought the forum costs that were intimated and that seemd to necessitate the level of contribution that's been previously hinted at.

I based that view on previous experience of part ownership of a football forum and knowing the costs of my own businesses websites running costs.

If you're genuinely saying that your costs are as stated and this site is a non for profit operation, then I'm more than willing to chuck some dosh into the pot lad.

No he's lying. :drunk:

It's a common misconception lads, especially when you have the likes of GoDaddy on the telly saying domain and hosting for a quid or something. A little bit of knowledge is also misleading. "My website costs a fiver a month to host..."

GOT used to cost about 30 quid a month in 2007-09, when on a shared server, but we now need a dedicated server, and a good one that can handle thousands of simultaneous connections to two mySQL databases. Given we're routinely targeted, we also need a backup service that downloads a full backup offsite for a day. The costs are for 2015 are here.

[Edit] I've just realised I've missed out quite a few costs there. We have to pay for all our email notifications through Amazon, and app push notifications. We also have to pay for our email newsletter (sendy) and we have to pay for two security certificates so browsing is secure.

I have websites that cost me £25/30 a month, but the nature of GOT means it needs a lot more. A few years back I knew ToffeeWeb had more traffic, I asked ToffeeWeb who hosted them, mediatemple. I asked them for a quote here and they gave me a quote that was near 10x what the lads there was paying because of our setup/spike traffic.

Some will recall the days when GOT would routinely crash - I've tried to scrimp and save, it didn't work.

27 is definitely verging on late 20s though isn't it really

:dodgy:

Haha, as if I'm paying extra for internet. NEA.

It's a nice website and all, but it's just not worth any of my money. Let's be honest, it would die a slow death if it was only open to paying members.

I can appreciate that the site needs to be supported, but I'm passing the buck :p

Appreciate the honestly like, but nobody is asking you to are they?

What I'm asking is you disable adblock, so it costs me less.

At some point, I hope/expect to be able to block access to anyone who visits here unless they have adblock removed anyway.

Is the App generating any revenue @GrandOldTeam?

No mate, no ads/sponsor on it and we don't charge to download it.

It cost us money to pay a developer though, along with costs to keep it in app stores and also the data subscriptions (for the fixtures, widgets etc)

I would agree to a certain degree. Even if you don't have 20 sitting around you can donate a fiver every now and again.

Civic duty.

Certainly don't expect anyone to chip in, but I'd expect people to think "ang on, this costs someone money. I'll disable adblock to give them a hand"

I have just donated - my ad block is not on because I am a bit crap on computers - took me ages to find the bit on how to donate, then in a panic forgot my pay pal password and had to reset it with the help of my son, maybe make the benefits of a forum supporter more accessible for dunces like me!lol

Nice one joey, really appreciate it mate.

have had adblock turned off on this site for a while. is there anyway for me to make sure the ads load on mobile?

Thanks, by just not enabling the adblock facility on the new version of iOS.

Hey, can I have my GOT mug sent to Canada?

Yes mate, message address.

What generates more money, allowing the ads or paying £20?? Per person on average...

@GrandOldTeam

The £20, definitely - but that will always be an exception and very graciously received.

The key/real message is for fans to disable adblock.

I remember the bluekipper forum where the owners said they needed money from people or they couldnt have the forum anymore. The truth came out and it told that the owners put the money right into their own pockets, so how can we know that this isnt the case here too?

lol lol

Always laugh at the BK "truth". That'll be a nonsense mate - just like the people who claim their admins hacked their ITK accounts to post blag transfer rumours.

I recall at some point they in effect outsourced their forum to forum users to maintain so maybe something could have gone on there but the actual Kipper lads, steve, sausage etc wouldn't have been making any money through ads/contributions and it's very insulting to suggest so, and a kick in the teeth to lads who invested a lot of years to a free service for other fans.

I've itemised costs above, if anyone wants to see payment invoices, I can upload them along with bank transactions...

If we ever made a profit in a year, that would go on paying for the next year/reinvested into development, like a better app, bespoke developer for a rep system etc.

Quite simply it comes down to trust. Do you trust the guy that created this site and has underwritten all of its costs personally since early 2007*?

There's no obligation on you to do anything you don't feel comfortable with.

Such is the size of GrandOldTeam these days it is not realistic for the cost to fall to one individual.

The choice is yours, respectfully if you can afford it a contribution would be welcome. However there's no obligation.

Already had! I was actually wondering the other day, if I've got adds enabled on iPhone is that better than using the app (revenue wise)? I have just got that much into the habit of using safari I still use that instead of the app usually.

Bespoke rep system?!?

*reaches for wallet

We need a developer to build one.

We bought the last one, the developer sold it to a dodgy company who maintained it so we had to bin;

'Rep' is not a core component of the forum software. We used a third party modification and plugged it in. The developer sold it to a company in Vietnam who have subsequently been found guilty of shenanigans and been expelled from providing modifications for the forum software we use.

Rep system = more work for moderators imo if one could be able to be put back only positive feedback for good post - not negative rep for the sake of it!
As its like a schoolboy bullying exercise sometimes - the mods do , and can take posters to task and ban for very bad post - thats good enough imo!

Saw that one at the time, terrible really.

Was just wondering though - server costs as a request is a bit intangible (even though it's a legitimate ask) - but if you did set up a 'stretch goal' for something like a rep system specifically I think that would work.

Perhaps what I'm saying here is that I will give you £100 for a way of neg bombing

Bluekipper eh, a blast from the past that !
Its probably why the GOT has grown for sensible debate, the are other Everton forums, that the usage is low, and even their the mods there warn about lack of funds server cost etc - I rarely go on there as its just a Blue kipper reincarnation - I notice if anyone gets banned off the GOT they soon join it!
Any forum is great but the GOT is a forum with taste and decorum imo Blue kipper started off great for many years , and went to libellous, and over the top for even children to use the site on some subjects in the end its own success was its downfall - it dropped away came back , and never took off - yet I have know doubt the organisers tried their best to keep it going it was sad the way it went !!
