Graham Potter new Chelsea head coach confirmed

Might take a few months but I think he’ll have them purring the second half of the season. Tuchel played favorites and was too rigid at the end.

It's sometimes said stability brings success, but Chelsea have had a high turnover of managers ever since the start of the Abramovich era yet they've still won regular trophies and (mostly) had top four finishes, but no-one generally lasts in that gig more than 2 seasons.

5 year deal for Potter? I'll be really suprised if he sees that out. He comes across as a good bloke and clearly done a great job at Brighton but I have a suspicion that it will end in tears for him there.

Chelsea: “we want to hire you, are you willing to walk from Brighton?”

Graham: “trucks of guaranteed cash”

Chelsea: *beep beep beep beep

Every manager that has been there since the buying binge began ended up doing that sooner or later. It's the problem with too much of an embarrassment of riches coupled with the expectation of lifting a major trophy every time out. Some seasons, you need to reload so you don't end up rebuilding later.

I suppose they're thinking that if they get it together at the back, sooner or later the attack will take care of itself. One thing that can be said for Potter is that he got the club playing progessively better defense every season without needing big-money 'ins' to do it.

I agree with the consensus that it's a poor fit. Potter has never managed egos like this, or been in this kind of fishbowl, and those are very difficult skills to learn on-the-job.
But at some point pretty much every successful manager has to take that step up. Many of the games most successful managers have come from relatively obscure footballing backgrounds.

And there's every chance that he has dealt with rampant egos during his time at Swansea and Brighton. They're not the big fish that Chelsea are but they'll likely both had their fill of millionaire footballers with PL egos. And there's always the chance that the majority of the Chelsea players are pretty decent pros - successful footballers often are.

He seems to have a reputation as some timid data driven manager just because he's educated and speaks well. But he was a 6ft LB who spent his career kicking around the lower leagues. I'm pretty sure he's got a bit more spine than some give him credit for.
