Graphic Novels or comics or whatever

nice...wonder if they're worth owt. me mam reckons she has my punisher comics in the attic somewhere. i had around the first 40, UK edition.

really curious to check if they're still a good read. reading action-packed comics when 40-something is probably a different experience than when 11 years old lol
Yeah, mine will have been from around 1990-1992 or so.. no idea of they are worth anything! I've got some (8-10) Judge Dredd graphic novels. They're mint condition still. Probably not worth much like!

Always tbought about getting into the world of graphic novels. Recently downloaded the Scribd app for a trial and was enjoying Invincible until i realised they miss one volume and stopped and started reading one called Saga which is really enjoyable.

previously only read the classic Maus and a couple volumes of Sandman which ive always meant to get back to and finish.

Anyways, i dip in and out of the long running GOT book club thread here but was surprised to see there doesnt ever seem to have been a thread for this stuff.

So im sure theres fans and experts amongst us and lots like me who dont know much but wouldnt mind hearing some recommendations

Oh and not just on titles but also on how the hell to get what you want on a tablet....so many apps its hard to know. (Be nice to think id buy physical copies but itll never happen altho every now and then i search to see how much id have to pay to get the complete Peanuts....too much is the answer)

I can recommend Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics. There is a lot more to the media of comics than splash pages and panel transitions. Well worth a look if you want to delve more deeply into what is now considered an art form.

Fables by Bill Willngham was amazing. I'd recommend that to anyone, along with all the spinoff titles that went along with it.

Also all the Punisher Max titles are brilliant reads, especially the run written by Garth Ennis.

Got a load of Judge Dredd ‘graphic novels’, basically several previously published episodes from 2000AD put together in whole story lines. Some of the concepts they had back then were great and are very much visible in more contemporary films etc. Judge Dredd - The Complete Case Files iirc.

As a kid the Dredd art used to scare me - something about the gritty realism of the colour and the blood splatters, feel like it's a technique only ever used for Dredd for some reason.

The Boys

Anything by Neil Gaiman

Was coming in here to say that, although I have not read his comics, only his novels, my Fiancée is a huge fan of everything he does. Never even heard of him before I met here and it is one of those times when I think, why, he is superb.

She has the full set of Sandman which I may get round to some day but to be honest I don't take to reading comics that well. Find it hard to jump around the boxes, etc.

If anyone is interested in Vikings or warrior stuff in general then I highly recommend The Northlanders by Brian Wood. It only ran 50 issues and I'm pretty sure that the entire run is still available in the form three trade paper backs. Its quality. The writing, the art, everything.

As a total novice knowing nothing about Graphic Novels and comics generally, a picture like this helps to understand slightly.

What are GOT comic and Graphic Art most standout, memorable scenes etc and why?

Would really love to understand the facisnation

Really appreciate that

Ill definitely be coming back to all these recs. As said above though the frustrating part is how to get them. Happy to pay for a decent app to use on iPad like but i cant see that the services are as of yet up to the point of having massive back catalogues available. Signed up for trial with Scribd but the offering is very limited

Its why i keep forgetting about it after a while, as realistically i wont be going out buying lots of physical media

I love having the books, even the act of heading out to the comic store to have a look. Theres a massive Japanese bookstore in the city here that has loads of titles too.

Keep an eye out for Gaiman, Alan Moore, Warren Ellis, Grant Morrison, Rick Remender, Garth Ennis, Brian K Vaughn.. a bunch more, you’ll find out which authors really speak to you as you get deeper in.

Big thanks to @bicycleheader for starting this thread. I haven't really properly thought about Fables and my other favourite comic runs for a few years now but thanks to this thread I went back and had a look at my old trade paperback collections and it reminded me just how good they really where. Then I went and googled the author to see what he's up to these days and found out that he's starting Fables up again (possibly for a limited run but maybe longer) right where he left off with #151, and its out sometime this mouth! Apparently he wrote some kind of Fables/Batman crossover six issue mini-series a while back and that's already available on trade. I've not read anything current, comic wise for a pretty long time now but I'll definitely be checking that out.

In my teenage years I collected 2000AD for years, had hundreds of them. Rouge Trooper was my favourite character.

It tied in with some of my favourite bands at the time with artwork etc - Mega City Four, Senseless Things and so on.
