Great Drummers

What the thoughts on Travis Barker or Questlove?
Personally think they’re very good but 🤷‍♂️.

Barker in particular seems to get a bit of hate possibly due to his fame but some better qualified than me could advise on his actual ability.
Not really a fan of Blink 182 bar the self titled album they made which was good in parts but....

Listened to an early one out of curiosity (Dude Ranch or something?) with their first drummer and it really shows the difference a good drummer makes even for pop-punk. Read into it a little more and apparently they parted ways with the original drummer while on tour and Barker stepped in and with no time to rehearse learned the drum parts to 20 songs within an hour before the first show with them. That might say more about the original drummer tbf.

He looks a bit try-hard but can't knock his playing. Took up drums at 4 and played all sorts of different genres growing up and it shows in comparison to a lot of his peers.

songs are often recorded in sections, certainly since the advent of DAW recording software, its a shame if they are using it to make sure the drummer is bang on the beat as it adds depth to a track if the drummer/bass is fractionally ahead/behind the beat. Needs to be consistent and planned though rather than just crap timing
I know of some producers that have forced some top drawer drummers to play to a click track, and in studios I've seen it even go as far as creating a 'drum machine' like track of the best of a selection of drummer samples - and this has been on full albums and 'hit' records.

Sonny Liston, former heavyweight champion of the world said” My dog can play the drums better than that big nosed fella with the Beatles” not sure about that but there was a big red nosed middle aged fella who used to the play the drums in one of the Orange Lodge bands who couldn’t half whack those drums especially when he marched passed The Bullring in London Road or passing SFX church in Shaw Street coming home on the 12th. of July every year!

Yeah - The notion that analog was always a pure and honest method is a strange one. Plenty of producers sat around with razor blades and adhesive tape splicing and putting together takes.

The live environment and some genres can mask a slightly sloppy drummer - studios are harsh.

Mike Portnoy, Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan, Chad Smith (obviously lots already mentioned are legends but not seen these mentioned and the first two are my favourites)

John Frusciante and Mark Knopfler, inspired me to pick up the guitar.

Coming from drums.

Danny Carey of Tool, Bonzo of Zeppelin. Then of course Neil Peart my absolute favorite, Keith Moon and so many others I could name.

For underrated: Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins.
