VICTORIAN FOOTBALL CROWDS AND GATES

"The Miseries of Pleasure - Football and a Keen East Wind", Moonshine, 1895

Around 2,000 spectators paid a shilling each to attend the first FA Cup final, between Wanderers and Royal Engineers, at the Oval in 1872. It was a large attendance in football terms, but but nothing compared to the 20,000 that international cricket matches could attract to the same ground. However, as our table below shows, football attendances grew along with the game's popularity as the Victorian era progressed.

FA Cup Final gates increased from 6,500 in 1882 to 22,000 in 1889. The 1892 final - the 20th at the Oval - drew a crowd of almost 33,000 spectators. After that, however, Surrey CCC decided that it could no longer allow football to damage its wickets. The final was moved to Fallowfield Stadium in Manchester, then Goodison Park in Liverpool, before finding a new permanent venue at the Crystal Palace. Almost 69,000 attended the FA Cup Final there in 1900.

The great occasion of the FA Cup final drew substantially higher crowds than top league matches. However, league attendances did increase steadily from the Football League's inception in 1888-89 through to the end of the Victorian era. Our table shows attendances for selected league matches between the two top-supported clubs of each season.

Overall, Everton were the top-supported Football League side of the Victorian era. For the first four league seasons, Everton played at Anfield, where they attracted average attendances of around 10,000. They were league champions in 1890-91, with the great Fred Geary the crowd’s goalscoring favourite. A move to Goodison Park in 1892 boosted average attendances to around 13,000, and within another five years they were up to around 17,500.

Everton had the highest average attendance of any club during the first 10 league seasons, only being surpassed towards the end of the era by Aston Villa, Newcastle United and Manchester City. Aston Villa had the highest average attendance of the 1899-1900 season of around 20,000.

Levski Sofia ex-player and captain Dimitar Ivankov (now retired) is the third highest scoring goalkeeper of all time, with 42 goals. That makes him third in the world after Ceni and Chilavert, and the first/top scorer in Europe! :)

Excellent penalty taker, he used to take them and I've grown up watching him and don't remember him missing a single one for Levski (though he probably has, I was but a kid lol )

News reports, such as this morning, saying "the Prime Minister will be chairing the national security Cobra Committee". He might well be chairing a national security committee but the Cobra bit merely refers to where it is held - Cabinet Office Briefing Room A - and despite the catchy name hinting at a rapid reaction is not the name of the committee itself.

Found this out the other day.

Darren in Hollyoaks was once in the pop group all star who had a little success in the early 2000's. He seems to be shot away from everyone else in the videos though so they probably didn't like him or something lol

Alternatively.....

The random gang members in the Warriors film were in fact real gang members who they couldn't get rid off set. Same as the michael jackson video for beat it, real gang members hired because they couldn't forcably move them

They were not all real gang members. Some were actors, but the main bit at the start where Cyrus is killed there over just over 1000 extras.

During filiming lots of real gangs interuputed filiming as it was at night and some do appear in the film. In fact, Crew members were sent death threats because local gangs weren't cast.

It used to be quite a common problem when filming in inner city areas in this country too mate. A lad I know does sound and lighting for amongst other things outside TV programmes. Quite often they would have to pay " a fee " to gangs to "protect " their equipment and vehicles. If they didn't pay up their guards would be threatened and stuff would get set on fire. I believe they pay for a Police presence now.

I know the crew from The Warriors got peed on while setting up!

Wirral band Black had the music video for their song '87 song 'Wonderful Life' filmed at various places in and around Merseyside, including Southport Pleasureland.

They filmed in front of the Looping Star ride, which was being operated that day by my Father.

Boring, but Dad mentions it every ten minutes.

EDIT: I thought it was a band, turns out it was one bloke.
