Colin Dexter, the author of the Inspector Morse novels, wrote his first novel during a wet family holiday in Wales, whilst bored, stuck in a holiday cottage with his family.

He had never previously written anything, but after reading two cheap detective novels whilst on holiday, decided he couid better.

Dexter was a champion cross word compiler and took the name name of Morse and his side kick Lewis from his two regular opponents in crossword championships :

Sir Jeremy Morse and Mrs B Lewis.
 

George Morrison (January 7, 1919 – November 17, 2008) was a US Navy rear admiral and commander of the U.S. naval forces in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Gulf of Tonkin Incident of August 1964, which sparked an escalation of American involvement in the Vietnam War. He was the father of Jim Morrison, the lead singer of the rock band The Doors

Whichever way you look at it; it surprises met that somebody thought that this seemed like the right thing to do.

Then again somebody also thought that this was a marvellous idea when there was no industry in the wide vicinity.
