California is a small village in the hills above Falkirk, round the corner from Shielhill where our former captain David Weir hails from.
The Plimsoll Line, which denotes the safety margin for carrying loads on the side ships, became law in the UK in 1876 and is named after the Politician and social reformer - Thomas Plimsoll.
Plimsoll recognised that many many ships were dangerously overloaded, to maximise profit and also sometimes to deliberately sink them for the insurance money.
There was scant regard for the crews, due to them being recruited from the slums as being seen as expendable.
