Groucho's Fact Hunt

In 1881, Joseph Swan; duel inventor of the electric light with Edison, supplied his incandecant bulbs to light the D'Oyly Carte Savoy Theatre London.
In 1882 production of Iolanthe Swan made tiny tiaras lit up as a gimmick with little bulbs powered by a quite large backpack battery for the fairies.

From which we get the term...
Fairy Lights
Hang on.....
Swan invented the electric light bulb.

Later on Edison, who ran a complex where he took the credit for many of his employees' prolific innovations might have made certain improvements. Typical yank shouting loudly "notice me" to take credit. :coffee:

By duel inventor I meant they both had versions at more or less the same time.
Edison actually tried to sue Swan but found his patents that strong he dropped the case and eventually formed a company with Swan

Swan's carbon rod lamp and carbon filament lamp, while functional, were still relatively impractical due to low resistance (needing very expensive thick copper wiring) and short running life.
While searching for a better filament for his light bulb, Swan inadvertently made another advance. In 1881, he developed and patented a process for squeezing nitrocellulose through holes to form conducting fibres. His newly established company (which by merger eventually became the Edison and Swan United Company) used Swan's cellulose filaments in their bulbs.

That was his light bulb moment right there.

The world’s longest burning lightbulb has been going since 1901

I don’t know if there’s a specific reason that these type bulbs weren’t in widespread commercial use other than to make more money ...

It's long been very easy to make light bulbs last much, much longer. However the current religion of unbounded, amoral capitalism was and still is happy to allow dwindling, scarce tungsten supplies end up in land fill to maintain sales to collect wealth today and let our offspring worry about resources and pollution.
